Its a great place to hangout. A nice view especially from the lake across the state road. Surely recommended.

This is a beautiful and difficult hike. It took us 80 minutes to climb up and that included rest stops and photos. There is shale on the trail near the top of the Butte. Wear appropriate shoes and bring plenty of water. The trail is wide enough for one person so you need to show courtesy to let other people walk by. There are a number of traditional tobacco ties along the way which celebrates the Lakota tradition. The views are gorgeous. It's worth the climb and be sure to take the necessary precautions.

My husband and I were really excited to try to take this nearly 2 mile hike to the summit. We walk our dogs 5-7 miles a day so figured we would be well prepped for this. Boy were we wrong! The hike is very steep in lots of places, lots of loose rocks and weird outcroppings. The views are beautiful but we only made it to the top of the peak to the right of Bear Butte. The signs state that Bear Butte actually is a mountain by true definition and man it sure did feel that way. That first peak we reached was only halfway into the hike, so I can't even imagine how much worse it would have been to go the entire way!

What an amazingly beautiful place! We hiked the 1.85 miles to the summit, with a 1000 ft. elevation. The hike was not difficult other than a few areas that were quite steep. The path was sometimes loose rock, which you have to climb with care. The views were spectacular, well worth the hike! The flora on the hike is really wonderful, from wild mint to wild raspberry to wild snapdragon. The Lakota tributes (colorful fabric swatches tied onto tree branches) to the area made it even more special. You can also see buffalo on the way and the visitor center is informative and very nice.
