Beautiful area with many swimming areas - unfortunately many places are overcrowded and littered. Some places are being closed to swimmers because people are abusing the area, many of the swimming areas have been written up in New York Times - causing overcrowding, litter, other...More

You'll be happy if you follow my advice, by taking the Spruceton Road to the gate, at its very end, then walking the gently ascending trail for 1 mile. You will soon reach a clearing with a rustic, wooden bridge, and from its foot, will...More

I've been hiking and spending leisure in the catskills for over 50 years and I've seen fabulous views from dozens of trails. In addition to the amazing hiking there's skiing, tubing, train rides, nice hotels/resorts, terrific restaurants, zip lining, well marked and maintained biking, snowmobile,...More

Biked around the Ashokan reservoir with some friends, and it was really nice. The scenery was gorgeous, some areas are closed off from traffic, all in all a nice experience. We'll be back for sure.

Most trailheads are available year-round. Snow becomes a question, but common sense should be exersized. For the trail into Diamond Notch Falls from Spruceton, for example, there is a parking lot, but no camp site. If you... More

I would agree with James' reply and emphasize his comment about the black flies, which last from mid-May to the end of June. They can be a real bother.

By mid-October the leaves will probably be down, but the visibility will give more distant views. For hiking in the Catskills, I would recommend one of the many guide books, as a useful companion. As for accomodation, there... More

Travelling from NYC to Niagara (2 Replies)
We are planning a drive at the very beginning of October 2014 from NYC to Niagara over a 2 day period via the Catskill Mountains. I was wondering on where would be the best place to stop over night, I was tossing up between Syracuse and Ithica, if there are any other ideas I would appreciate it or any input to which place would be the best for a family with 3 kids and also the grandparents are coming along too (7 people all up). Another 2 places that caught my attention was Albany and...More

Is it 1 day to drive to NF then 1 day to spend there? If so, Syracuse is better located time-wise as it is more accessible on higher speed roads such as the interstate and the NYS thruway. If you had more time, Ithaca would be the choice.

New York to Buffalo (6 Replies)
We are planning on flying to New York next year for 2 weeks and either renting a car or RV and travelling up to Buffalo/Niagra. We will obviously spend 3 or 4 days both ends but can anyone recommend a route. We will have 2 kids of 11 and 15 and don't mind deviating for something worthwhile (we're pretty much up for anything.) Have noted the Finger Lakes - will probably try the canoeing etc. Saw the Catskill Mountains on the map - is that a good area? Is it feasible to go to Montreal or will...More

We are planning to go August 07 (like to get organized!) Yes, flying would be an option - I just thought that there would probably be so much to see and do between the two cities it would make a nice trip travelling up. However will go on the website you recommended thanks!

Wells Beach will leave you nicely located for numerous day and part-day trips... among those I would suggest would be (Note: almost all can be Googled for more info, driving directions, etc.):: -- The Nubble Lighthouse in York, ME -- York Beach -- Ogunquit Playhouse (great summer theater) -- Perkin's Cove and Marginal Way oceanside walk in Ogunquit -- Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunk -- Dock Square and Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport -- Old Orchard Beach -- old-fashioned amusement...More
