UP Itinerary from Mackinaw City to Duluth
Aug 2021 • Family
UP in 3 days? Totally doable. Stayed in Mackinac Island and checked out the UP. Day 1: from Mackinaw City drove to Taquamenon Falls and headed up to Pictured Rocks in Munising and caught a 2.5 hour cruise in Munising and stayed the night. Day 2: From Munising, drove to the Keewanaw Peninsula all the way to Copper Harbor and drove through the Brockway Mountain drive on the way back and stayed in Houghton, Michigan. Day 3, from Houghton, drove west towards the Porcupine Mountain state park and ended up in Duluth. Tomorrow, I will work my way back to Rochester, MN, where I’m from. I feel this itinerary highlighted some of the best Michigan has to offer in only three days if you are heading to or from Minnesota by way of Duluth. This review is written for UP first-timers like me. Paid an arm and a leg for booking last minute as I had no idea what to do. Reviews I checked out said terrible wireless connectivity. It’s true but I was able to make the trip using only my phone GPS, although I packed an atlas and a Garmin GPS just in case. I didn’t have to use both on this trip. There are a few patchy blackout areas but once the phone downloads directions, I was good.

We did the Lake Superior Circle Tour so we travelled across the UP. Beautiful scenery and many family friendly brew pubs. Lots of parks, maritime museums, etc. we really enjoyed Pictured Rocks boat tour. Marquette is a fun town with lots to do.

Upper Peninsula of Michigan offers nature at its winter best!
Feb 2019 • Couples
Most winter weekends I travel from South Central Wisconsin to the Upper Peninsula, particularly the Ironwood / Bessemer area. The opportunities to hike, snowshoe, ski (both downhill and cross country) are multiple and quite varied. And of course the snowmobiling is unrivalled. Takw time to explore some of the local cultural treasures, such as the Historic Ironwood Theater with its eclectic performance offerings and its venerable and much appreciated vintage Barton Organ.

Winter trip to the Baycliff Health Camp at Big Bay, Michigan 35 miles north of Marquette, Michigan 2019
Feb 2019
The Baycliff Health Camp is a facility that is dedicated for and provides recreational opportunities for people with Disabilities, with a large summer program for children with serious disabilities. It provides these events and services at very low costs due to significant charitable contributions from a variety of sources.

I have Multiple Sclerosis and was invited to participate in this winter program that began beginning at 6:00 PM on Friday, February 1, 2019 ending today, Sunday, February 3, 2019 at noon.

I live near Lake Ann, Michigan which is located approximately 15 miles due west of Traverse City, Michigan. Most people associate everything in Michigan with Detroit, Michigan. Lake Ann s a 6 hour drive away from Detroit.

I decided to leave early and stay at the Quality Inn at Newberry, Michigan. Initially I had planned on departing Lake Ann on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. Lake Ann got about 24 inches of snow that previous night. I had to stay and snow rake part of my roof. I finally departed late on Thursday January 30, 2019. I decided to take the trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula by driving to Gaylord, Michigan and them taking I- 75 from Gaylord to the Mackinaw Bridge. The roads were bad getting to Gaylord. I- 75 was much worse.

I arrived after 4:30 AM at the Quality Inn at Newberry, Michigan. Because I have Multiple Sclerosis, access into and out of facilities is very important to me. I made my reservations by contacting Choice Hotels. com.And because I need easy access to the motel or Hotel. The people that I spoke with, had booked me into a second story room. There are no elevators at this facility, albeit, a pretty big place (many Hotel Rooms). Diane changed my rooms for that night and for tonight, plus she helped bring my stuff in from the car.

Terry Lynne, is the person at the check in desk late this afternoon is as wonderful as Diane was on late Thursday/ Friday morning.

There is no swimming pool at this location, but there is a huge Hot Tub.

This facility also rents snow mobiles, big, new looking snow mobiles.

Wonderful breakfast, plus the two people that I had any significant interaction with were wonderful. That being said, I had some brief interaction with, which was also beyond them simply being nice. They were all seemingly, almost convincingly helpful. In other words they went out of their way to be helpful.

We went to chase northern lights around this area. We did not get to see those but the entire place is scenic and has beautiful fall colors around.

The Porcupine Mountains in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan
Sep 2018
Another great State of Michigan Park. This state does a great job. The Lake of the Clouds, pictured here, is stunning. The Park is full of well maintained trails, great camping sites, and few roads. Part of the Great Northern Trail follows the shore of Lake Superior in the Park. We were too early for the fall colors, but they are reported to be worth another trip

Just driving/sightseeing
Aug 2018 • Couples
Making the drive from the southern tip of Michigan across the Mackinaw Bridge to the Upper Peninsula then across and down into Wisconsin. The Hwy 2 drive in the U.P. Is very pretty as it goes along the lake for the most part. It is a very peaceful drive. The water is so clear. I would drive this again just to feel part of nature.

Second week in October - AMAZING FALL COLOR
Oct 2017
We visited the UP for 3-4 days, and had a wonderful time driving the backroads during peak Fall color. While there, we just had to find a pasty shop and have them for lunch. This is a copper and iron minor's traditional food and is delicious. We tried to find as many waterfalls as we could for the time we had there and were glad we did. The local tourist information booklets gave us ample directions to the falls, other scenic areas and tasty restaurants. The hospitality of the UP was so gracious and welcoming.

Don't want to share really.............
Aug 2016 • Family
A true Michigander...born and raised...I feel we have one of most beautiful states! Its untouched beauty and peacefulness I hope will be preserved forever....
Catch 22 I want everyone to enjoy how great the UP is, respect and keep it just the way it is. Copper Harbor although far is worth the trip, take a trip to the little lighthouse island, don't remember the cost but saw eagles nested and wild thimble-berries abound, known only to this area, thimble berry jam and unusual flavor-sample before buying not everyone likes it, a bit bitter in taste hard to describe. We drove the lower route going and upper coast returning to the lower that way you cover the whole area. Pictured rock a must do also. On the lower stop at Big Spring-Kitchi-iti-kipi amazing view does not look like much but worth the go out on a platform attached to a cable, to the middle of the springs. There is a clear bottom in the center of pontoon and you can see the spring water coming up from the lake as well as Trout sizes you cannot imagine the view is like out of movie. There is a small park store with snacks and t-shirts etc.
If time allows eat at Java Joes just east of the bridge in saint ignace between Breakers Resort and Holiday Inn 959 N State Street- when returning to the lower-tell him the barber from Romeo recommended LOL. Youll know you have arrived when you see the painted VW van out front...Great breakfasts and the owner is and interesting gentleman small intimate place one of those "how did you discover this place". Enjoy!
