A must play and stay if coming to northern Michigan. Best groomed courses in the state. A challenge to all levels of the game. Truly a must if your a golfing nut who wants to see the best this state can offer

Golf Courses were five stars .
The accommodations and service were really disappointing compared to any other golf resort I have visited. Rooms were dark and dreary and bathrooms needs an update. The bed was concave and uncomfortable.
The staff was very pleasant but inattentive, and not on the ball. As a result the service was very slow. Menu was very basic but not bad
The good thing is that the golf courses were terrific particularly Forrest Dunes which was immaculate. The Loop was obviously innovative and like playing in Ireland, hard fairways and greens that would not hold. Bring your short game. Practice facilities including the nine hole putting course were excellent.
So definitely worth a day trip. Spend the night if you have to but lower your expectations.

they have a ridiculously high opinion of themselves.. They say that if Arcadia Bluffs is Michigans "Pebble Beach", then F Dunes is it's Spyglass"!! What a joke!!!! In the middle of nowhere... More bugs than a person should encounter in a lifetime, and WAY too many retired marshalls/starters walking around with clipboards in their hands, when, on the hottest day in 3 years, they may have been on carts keeping the on course water jugs full, or maybe at these rates, ACTUALLY HIRE another cart person for those 3 dollar bottles of water!!!! Honestly, we would have (no kidding) paid $10 for water if it had been available!!! Got our round for 50% off because we were 55... Big deal... $75 instead of $150!!! You have got to be kidding!!! Did no one at this course get the memo that the economy is still somewhat in the dumpster??? Save yourself some grief....drive 40 miles up 75 to Gaylord and play Otsego Club.Tribute...unreal value...stunning views, condition and staff... No two holes are the same, and Very playable.

Well folks, we went to this place based of some rave reviews. Major disappointment.
The rooms were very, very basic, with ultra thin walls. You could hear people whispering in the hall way...no joke.
The golf course was mediocre at best, as was the food and service. I would never go back to this place and can't recommend it to others.
The end.
Happy trails!

very nice resort, excellent customer service, staff all around the resort was immaculate, food was good not excellent (compared to arcadia for example or any other such high end destination). lodging very nice convenient to the club house and amenities. Courses not so "Great" definitely not that high up in the state, i'm sure i don't know as much as golf digest does but i've played many other courses in this state that have more character and are more fun to play than this course. Forest Dunes, nice course, greens immaculate very fast the way you expect them to be, fairways rolling hard and tight. Mainly not a lot of character not very appealing, won't say "boring" thats more like the loop, but definitely close to that. The loop is just a waste of money, again very fast immaculate greens yes, but everything else tee to green is mehhhhhh. Just plain boring, now the idea is kind of cool and interesting (to play same course backwards) but that don't help the character of the course, maybe a great idea for a local country club for members to play two diff courses for the price of one but definitely not for such destiantion. Not my cup of tea, definitely should not even be close in ranking to a course like Arcadia bluffs.

Definitely above average course..I think it is overpriced, and in August there are lots of gnats on the course.
Its also out by itself, but they are building another course that will be finished in 2016 or 2017 (not sure)

Stay away. You will have a miserable experience. Gnats everywhere even if you apply bug spray constantly as we did.

Nice course, not spectacular. Being refused a shower after paying green fees at a nice course is unacceptable.

I had the pleasure of playing Forest Dunes on June 5, 2015. The course more than lived up to the hype and I enjoyed every minute of it.
The course was in perfect condition. Tees, fairways and greens were impeccable. The greens at Forest Dunes have a sandy base; they are firm and very quick, but totally playbale. I never felt like I had to putt defensively on any hole. Some greens have considerable undulation and slope, but they are not impossible.
Forest Dunes eases you into this parkland and sand dune environment on the first hole. A fairly easy par 4 with a generous landing area, but the waste bunkers are present in front of the tee and on the right. Highlight holes for me were the par 4 6th with the first of a few split fairway holes and the par 4 8th with a great green setting for your approach with water behind and right of the green and the clubhouse in the distance.
The back nine was much more open than the front and the waste areas are much more prevalent on this side. Highlight holes on the back were the the par 4 12th with a great green site set hard against a pristine pond on the right, the tough 14th with water on the left, the visual intimidation of hitting over a vast waste area on the long par 3 16th and and the drivable par 4 17th with all kinds of options....
I had a good day and was able to keep my ball out of the waste areas; save for a couple holes, but I can see how it could be a long day if you visit these areas on a regular basis. Speaking of the waste areas, unlike most that I am accustomed to, the sand within them at Forest Dunes is very soft and actually difficult to walk through. Waste areas are normally firm at most courses and allow carts to drive through them; this is not the case at Forest Dunes as carts are not allowed due to the consistency of the sand. This makes the waste areas much more penal than normal. It's not a negative in my eyes, just worth pointing out because it's outside of the norm.
I found the entire course very playable. Everything is right in front of you and there are no tricked up holes where you're not sure how to proceed. As a first timer to the course it was very easy to make our way around.
Throughout the round I couldn't wait to get to the next tee to see what that hole had to offer. The variety of holes and the creative design features around the greens made every hole unique and memorable. Even an extra hole at the end of the day left me wanting more and to get to yet another tee. To say that I enjoyed my round at Forest Dunes would be an understatement. The quality of golf is sensational. The course easily made its way into my top five. The friendly staff; from the starter on the first tee to the workers on the course to the staff in the clubhouse and proshop just added to the experience.
Make the trip to Roscommon Michigan to play Forest Dunes; you'll be glad you did.

I recently golfed here with a few buddies.
The Positives:
-Very well maintained course.
-Very nice staff
-Challenging but playable. I've played a few top end courses that seemed like they were designed for Pro Players. I'm a bogey golfer on average, with the ability to shoot anywhere from 84-100 depending on the course. I shot 47-42 for an 89. Water & Woods on the front 9 contributed to the 47. Hit it straight you are ok here.
-Great views, wildlife, nice scenery.
-Very nice practice range for driving or Chipping
-Great clubhouse
The Negatives:
-It's in the middle of nowhere. It's a 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive from Grand Rapids or Detroit, so it's a bit of a haul. It's worth going to, just plan on a day trip if you are coming from either location. Or spend the night in Gaylord or a near by town and hit another course the following day.
-A bit expensive IMO. $150 on the weekends, $120 during the week.
Overall Thoughts: A good once a year golf course for me, especially for the price. On par with Tullymore (Big Rapids), Thousand Oaks (Grand Rapids) and Kingsley Country Club (Kingsley if you can get on..do it!!).
