Just follow the road ~ it will lead you to forts, amazing restaurants , L.L.Bean and most importantly all the Maine Lighthouses on the coast.

This coastal highway requires a very attentive driver but is well worth the effort. Winding along the beautiful California coastline offers plenty of spectacular views - the ocean and the birds, whales and water creatures that inhabit it, the scenic rural hills and dales, and the lighthouses, wineries and other tourist spots that line it from south to north. Traffic can be heavy at spots, slow moving RVs can be irritating, but using patience and caution, taking the time to enjoy the views, stop now and then in the many pull offs, and just accepting that some vehicles are slow or poorly driven will all combine to make driving any portion of this route well worth the effort.

Spend the money to rent a car and drive the state. Maine is not that big (compared to Texas where I am from) the shoreline is breath-taking and seemingly endless. The quaint towns you drive through are comfortable and welcoming. Take the time!

The drive up the Maine Coastline was awesome with breathtaking views! Don’t be in a hurry! There is so much to enjoy! We drove from Bar Harbor to Portland. We enjoyed small towns full of shops and amazing seafood all along the way. All the lobster rolls we could eat and lighthouses everywhere! We would find our way off the beaten path and find ourselves back out by the water or exploring the sidewalks of another old harbor town. So many treasures and so many great places to stop and see. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy Acadia National Park. Our visit was timed for the Fall foliage. The coastal highway did not disappoint. It’s was the trip of a lifetime!

I was disappointed by the price inflation of gas, food, and everything along the route. Many miles between gas stations, so they got ya.
