We were camping nearby and out walking around and stumbled upon this trail. We weren't fully prepared for a hike, but followed it a ways, meandering alongside the water, enjoying nature in all it's glory until we encountered a huge tree over (blocking) the trail. The sun was getting lower so we went ahead and turned around at that point to head back out.
Given that we're not from the area and randomly found the trail, I cannot tell you what section we were on or the mileage number.
For us, it was just a chance encounter with a trail and nice find at that. :)

Nice rugged trail along the beautiful river. Plenty of scenic views. The signage could be better but other than that a great day or over night hike.

There are several segments to the trail. Check them out at blueridgeramblers.com. Good directions and information on difficulty of the hikes and what the features are of each segment. Always be aware of weather conditions as winter brings early sunset and cool temperatures quickly. Be cautious of pending rain as the river can rise suddenly. This is a beautiful, wild river--respect its power!

This review is written only for this 5-6 mile section of the trail and for the time period of August 1, 2013. It appears that this section of trail has not had any maintenance done on it in some time. Many large trees and obstructions have fallen across the trail and there has been a lot of erosion making the pathway very narrow in places and undetectable in other places. I am including one photo which will show a somewhat dangerous situation. One large tree with no bark left on it has toppled over the trail and is so large that it is difficult to get over it. The tree slopes down so sharply that any slip will send you down into the water in the river. Efforts to cut notches in the tree have been made and a stirrup has been added to help in climbing over the tree. This is only one of the obstructions. At an eroded place a rope has been tied to shrubs to help. I do not recommend this for very young children or elderly occasional hikers until something has been done to remedy the situation.

One of the hidden gems of this area is the Chattooga River Trail. As an end-to-end 37.5 mile hike, this easy to moderate trail offers beautiful waterfalls, refreshing swimming holes and excellent trout fishing.

When compared to the more well-known Appalachian Trail, the CRT has considerably lighter foot traffic which gives a better sense of wilderness for those wanting to enjoy nature and not simply pile on mileage.
