Easy beautiful drive from Durango. The lake is beautiful with lots of campsites and RV spaces. has a General store. We road bikes on the NE corner of the lake, some paved and some crushed rock, we have hybrid bikes and like level, some small hills. Great place to hike as well--very quiet!! Interesting to see how nature is recovering... More

Traveled to both Lemon & Vallecito Lakes our 1st day in Durango to escape some mid June high temps. Drove around the perimeter of Vallecito and on to Lemon. Imagine for the locals even with the Animas River running right through town there's a time & place to go to Vallecito- for the open space sometimes not available on a... More

We had made reservations months in advance for this campground - Lake Vallecitio Camp Ground - Durango area. There were no reviews that I could find but under the Forest Service it stated that it is a very popular camping area with 80 sites. We made a 5 day reservation. It is on the west tip of the lake and... More

We traveled to Lemon Lake and then to Vallecito Lake . The lakes are stunning , the water was smooth as glass and the reflection of the trees and mountains was gorgeous to see . We followed the Trail of Carvings, 15 tree carvings done to commemorate the people who fought the big fire that happened there . These were... More

For much of the summer, my spouse was laid up with a shattered heel from the beginning of season. When his doctor gave him the ok, we headed here and weren't disappointed. You can park near the shore and go for a dip or just lay out in the sun. Lots of swimmers, waders, jet-ski riders, sailors, and other lake... More

This is a beautiful area. We went in search of all the 15 carvings that one man had done in honor of all the people that fought the huge fire they had there. It was a humbling experience.

There is a marina on Vallecito. New ownership as of this summer. New slips and friendly employees. A great place!

Beautiful drive out to Lemon Lake and Vallecito Lake. We weren't real sure about the dirt road that goes around part of the lake, but we made the drive and it was outstanding viewing. Be sure to check out both lakes!

Great fishing for brown and rainbow trout, walleye, pike. The lake is very large this year and almost flooded due to the rainy season. I have seen it only about a quarter full during last years drought. They rent boats and paddle boats at the marina. The weather is usually very nice 70-80 daytime, 30-50 at night depending on which time... More
