See the CO River in all its glory. The River was full which was reassuring. It was a warm day and in sections, you could see rafters and some paddle boarding. The sheer cliffs against the water were gorgeous.

We were on the concluding end of our 7867 mile Amtrak journey when we were passing through the Colorado River valley. Awesomely beautiful. We saw the third bald eagle of our journey here also.

My wife and I on a whim decided to endure a train trip from Detroit to California first week of September 2015, on the Southwest Chief route then took the Zephyr route back. Besides the initial leg of coach class, we purchased a roomette aboard the SW Chief and Zephyr. Although the roomette was smaller than expected and a little disappointing, the staff, the diner and the experience were well above our expectations and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip. As Canadians the equivalent trip would have cost us $4899.00 (on sale), which on AMTRAK cost us less than 2K. Although I don't want to get on the train again anytime soon, I would highly recommend the experience and sights that you will see on this trip. Perhaps when the sound of the tracks leave my head, I will consider another journey :)

What a fun way to reach Salt Lake City...travelled via sleeper on Amtrak from Chicago to Salt Lake City. I have no idea how expensive this is, we used Amtrak points. The highlight of the train trip for my kids (and several Amish ladies from Ohio) was the many many mooners on the Colorado River. This had my autistic child (and the ladies) in fits of hysterical laughter. We loved having the sleeper, and the breakfasts were good, dinner OK and unfortunately, lunches not great (when you have a sleeper, all food is included). Wine selection and desserts were good, but ran out of the best by California (we reboarded the train later, though the Utah to California part of the trip was not as good). Bring Uno or some other easy family game and your IPads. We rented a car in Salt Lake City and headed to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons and then fossil collecting in Kemmerer Wyoming and to Park City before reboarding at Salt Lake City. Caution here, the reboarding is close to midnight and our train was delayed by a cow on the tracks, we actually had to rent a hotel room so the kids could fall asleep while we waited.

Take a drive and look off to the side of the road and discover nature. This river after the snow melts delivers a lot of water to the entire desert area.
