Hiked in via Reds Meadow with my daughter last August. The weather was pleasant, just cold, not freezing at night. There were a few other people camping around the lake but none close. I have been trekking for more than 2 decades. This is the most beautiful trek ever. The route we took was from Agnew Meadows then up the Shadow Creek trail to Shadow Lake. Thousand Island Lake is easily one of the premier destinations at Mammoth Lakes, CA. The lake is located 10000 ft up from sea leve in the Minaret Mountains and the quickest route there is the 15 miles RT hike through the River Trail located at 8000 ft.
