Great Trip Down the California Coast

Having heard about the amazing views seen from the train, my fiancé and I decided to take the Coast Starlight down from Sacramento to Los Angeles. It was a 14 hour trip but we... read more

We recently took the Starlight from Seattle to Emeryville. Definitely not for the young and restless. It is a less-stress alternative to air but don't expect great unbroken vistas or haute cuisine. Sleeper quarters are tight but the parlor car affords opportunity to meet others, read, or just appreciate a once-truly American way to travel. Tip: Skip the "wine tasting."... More

I needed to get to north central Oregon from central California. I thought Amtrak would be the way to go. I was mistaken. As far as I can tell the Amtrak trains are rarely on schedule. Mine were not, both hours late. The travel is slow and not inexpensive. The fellow travelers were friendly as were most of the staff.... More

Very limited dining options for introverted solo travelers, vegetarians and the gluten intolerant. Today I was not in the mood to join a table of strangers in the dining car -- which people traveling in groups of one or three are forced to do if they want to eat at a table. I was happy to hear that meals could... More

my better half and i just took the grandkids from emeryville (emy) to seattle (sea) and back. a great time was had by all. the grandkids (8 and 4) very quickly became quite enamoured with the trips from our sleeper car to the dining car (etc.) ...especially crashing thru the connecting doors with their hands (and sometimes feet) whacking the... Having heard about the amazing views seen from the train, my fiancé and I decided to take the Coast Starlight down from Sacramento to Los Angeles. It was a 14 hour trip but we are excited to experience the trip by train and had reserved a sleeper car cabin . We checked in our luggage and boarded the train early... More

Took the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles with a roomette the entire way. I've been in roomettes before and it's why I booked one especially for this trip. I spent most of my time in the roomette looking out the window or napping but surprisingly never bored and the time went by quickly. I was on the west... More

No other way to see the California coast up close. Meals (included in the sleeper fare) were better than expected. Staff, especially Maurice in the diner, were friendly and always helpful.

I've ridden it three times. Twice from LA to Oakland and once from Oakland to La. Highly recommend a cabinette! Be sure to get a room on the oceanview side or you'll miss the beautiful views of the Pacific, the beaches and hopefully some whales. Winter time is the best time to go but it's a great ride anytime.

We have taken the Amtrak Coast Starlight train from Oakland to San Luis Obispo and back many times, but this was the first time in business class. We will never go back to coach. In business class you get a small private roomette suitable for two people. If you ride overnight the space can be made into 2 beds. There... More

Wanting to avoid LA traffic when travelling from San Diego to Monterrey in California we took the Pacific Surfliner to LA's Union Station, then the Coast Starlight to San Luis Obispo. Both were wonderful. Beautiful scenery, friendly attentive staff, relaxing atmosphere, and new friends. The food was good, and the free continental breakfast and afternoon snack pack with wine or...
