Great way to break up LAX To SFO trip

We took the coast starlight from LA to San Luis Obispo then rented a car for the rest of the trip. We had flown in to LAX the same morning. This was much more relaxing than... read more

I've been meaning to take this trip for awhile now - finally got my act together and booked a sleeper car. Amtrak offers a few different sleeper options. I went with the one with a bathroom/shower. I was solo and figured I'd like the more room. I didn't use the shower (very cramped space). I was going to check into... More

Takes a couple more hours, but I arrive in SF relaxed and refreshed. The ppl watching is always interesting, and you can't beat the view out the window. The food in the dining room is great, and the porters are helpful.

Travelled from Seattle to Santa Barbara. Worst journey ever. We had a roomette booked. The train was initially delayed and we had to travel to Portland by another train where we had a long wait for a replacement. Eventually arrived in Santa Barbara 6 hours late. The customer service was terrible. We were constantly given conflicting information. The restaurant ran... More

I absolutely love travel by train. I love the scenery, from sweeping vista to the backstage gritty urban scenes one only gets from the rails while entering a metropolis. I love meeting people, swapping tales with the staff and even sharing the dinner table. I love train stations, not going thru security, boarding at my leisure and having plenty of... More

We took the coast starlight from LA to San Luis Obispo then rented a car for the rest of the trip. We had flown in to LAX the same morning. This was much more relaxing than driving all the way. (Which I've also done). The train seats are large and comfortable. The cafe service is ok. The views of the... More

Summary: Not on Time, Not Comfortable, Poor Compensation for Troubles, Don't Do It!! Where to start? At the beginning, The Coast Starlight has a reputation for some of the most scenic vistas in the United States. Sounds like a great way to celebrate a 30th wedding anniversary. There is still some romantic notions about rail travel. So we booked our... More

We recently took the Coast Starlight from sacramento to Seattle. We had booked a roomette but on getting onboard at 12.30am found it too be much smaller than expected and a real challenge with carry on baggage. Would pay extra for bedroom if it was advertised on their website. Woke up to a garbled message regarding breakfast and when we... More

Took the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Sacramento. An overnight transit of 840+ miles. A very unique and enjoyable way to travel. Our "roomette" was comfortable, but sleeping for 2 was a bit of a challenge. If we did it again we'd want the full compartment as more spacious and a private bathroom whereas we had to us the public... More

Check your accommodation before you book. Our double sleeping roomette cost as much again as the train fare but was only about 6 inches wider than the bunks, with that space only by the door so changing clothes was not simple. Toilets and shower were available, clean and working. Consider checking your bags in. We had bags in our rooms... More

One word: DISASTER. Had to wait 3 hours in Seattle. Nobody says anything about what the hell is going on. Then in Portland 2 hours. I have been traveling for a while with them. This one is disgusting.
