We traveled from Dunsmuir CA to Portlamd OR in Business Class in September. BC offers wifi, Sleeping car size pillows, 2 bottles of water and a $6 voucher for food and drink. The upgrade cost $30 more but we enjoy the quieter car. It's like first class in Europe. You can even get your dining car meal delivered! The consistency... More

As an earlier review reveals, I've traveled on the Coast Starlight many times. It's been a year since I rode the train -- and this LA to PDX experience was part of a nation-wide long train journey which involved four different trains over the course of 10 days with a couple city stops in between. My experience was less positive... More

I travelled on the Coast Starlight from LA to Seattle as part of a trip to several US cities. I was ready for an alternative to airports, and for the chance to see the dramatic coastal scenery. I really enjoyed the trip. Booked into a Roomette cabin, I was pretty comfortable, although it would probably be a little claustrophobic sharing.... More

If you've never taken Amtrak before you can read up on other reviews here that explain it is not luxury travel and there are some traditions like sharing a table at dinner if you eat in the dinning car that might not appeal to everyone. This is only my second overnight train trip, the last one being years ago when... More

Enjoyed first class bedroom accommodations (Car1130 Room C) on Amtrak Coast Starlight this past weekend. We travelled from Seattle to San Francisco on southbound train 11. Alfred, our room attendant, was excellent. He was helpful, kind and courteous. Hope you get him. We tipped him about 25 dollars for the overnight. Later wished we had given more. Boarding began at... I hopped on the Coast Starlight in Emeryville and took it south to Los Angeles. I had a roomette toward the front of the train, and my sleeper car attendant was very eager to please. I don't think she ever sat down. She was constantly running to assure we had the best trip possible. I had just spent three days... More

First, I love train trips, and this was a very scenic one, LA to Seattle. Northbound, sit on the left side of the train and you get some ocean views in California before heading inland. You'll wake up to sunrise near Mt. Shasta, then the beautiful area around Klamath Falls and Willamette. On the down side, I booked Business Class,... More

We recently took the Starlight from Seattle to Emeryville. Definitely not for the young and restless. It is a less-stress alternative to air but don't expect great unbroken vistas or haute cuisine. Sleeper quarters are tight but the parlor car affords opportunity to meet others, read, or just appreciate a once-truly American way to travel. Tip: Skip the "wine tasting."... More

I needed to get to north central Oregon from central California. I thought Amtrak would be the way to go. I was mistaken. As far as I can tell the Amtrak trains are rarely on schedule. Mine were not, both hours late. The travel is slow and not inexpensive. The fellow travelers were friendly as were most of the staff.... More

Very limited dining options for introverted solo travelers, vegetarians and the gluten intolerant. Today I was not in the mood to join a table of strangers in the dining car -- which people traveling in groups of one or three are forced to do if they want to eat at a table. I was happy to hear that meals could... More
