Wanting to avoid LA traffic when travelling from San Diego to Monterrey in California we took the Pacific Surfliner to LA's Union Station, then the Coast Starlight to San Luis Obispo. Both were wonderful. Beautiful scenery, friendly attentive staff, relaxing atmosphere, and new friends. The food was good, and the free continental breakfast and afternoon snack pack with wine or... First off there were some wonderful views along the coast and thru the mountains - maybe good for 3-4 hours. That's all I can say that's really good. Otherwise this trip is actually lame. The biggest problem of all was the extremely poor and I mean horrendous customer service. We had a party of 12 and I counted every breakfast,... More

My travel was Northbound, Los Angeles, CA along the beaches and through the mountains to Portland, OR. By the beach the train is at waters edge and further North it is through the tall pines. This is the only Amtrak train in the system that has Parlor cars for First Class passengers which has a different food menu from the dining... I love trains and train rides but having said that this trip wasn't the greatest. The lack of fresh air really gets old after a few hours. The train has endless delays so it took twenty-five hours to travel from San Francisco to Seattle. The cars haven't been revamped since the seventies and the whole train feels sort of dirty.... We have taken Amtrak from Seattle to Los Angeles for years. Riding the train is a big part of our vacation. We bring audio books and games. There is a dining car and a cafe. The observation deck is great to watch the scenery go by. You can have a private room which includes all meals. Sure a plane will... More

We travelled from Seattle to LA .. 36 hours of changing landscapes and insights into parts of the USA we had never seen before. The food was excellent in both the dining and Parlour car.. We were only ignored by one rude server in the dining car on the second dinner.. Our cabin attendant was there but not intrusive. If... More

I enjoy travelling by train...too bad Amtrak can't stick to a schedule or I could travel this way more often! They delayed my departure by more than two hours the day after I booked it, day of trip their Web site said it was on time, but delayed 1 1/2 hours when I got here, just delayed another 1/2 hour...I... We took a cab from San Francisco to Jack London Square in Oakland (about $60), where we boarded the on-time Coast Starlight. We could not depend on getting to the Amtrak bus in San Francisco, as its schedule had changed and it was not clear when and where we could get the bus. Station in Oakland was quite nice. This...
