Real wilderness in the heart of California!
Jul 2016 • Family
This was a gem! We took our jeep out on Paradise Ridge Road and got away from everything. We had a blast! The drive was an easy 4x4 trail, and the views just kept getting better and better. Cellphone service was spotty and never saw another person in the 3 hours we were out there, so make sure you know what you're doing.

California Coastal Wilderness
Sep 2013 • Friends
This BLM protected coastal area is about as remote as one could get in Southern Humboldt County/Northern Mendicino Couty. This was hard to get to, off of Mattole Road along the Lost Coast Drive from Ferndale. We hit the north end of this recreation area located just outside of Petrolia. To get to the beach, I took Lighthouse Road and followed Conklin Creek to the Ocean. There is not a lighthouse nearby, so I do not know why the road is named Lighthouse Road.

If you want to camp or hike on a secluded on a beach, this would be the place. With rockin' waves, large seabirds, lots of kelp, this is the place to sit on a piece of driftwood, make a bonfire, and watch the sun go down.

Black Sands Beach is Wonderful and Worth the Drive
Jul 2013 • Couples
My husband and I decided to take a side trip to Black Sands Beach while driving south (over the course of several days) from Bandon, Oregon to San Francisco. It was quite an exciting drive from Redway over to the coast, lots of twists and turns and ups and downs. The ride was fun, but Black Sands Beach was the icing on the cake! We enjoyed this quiet and beautiful beach immensely. The sand is black. There are lots of smooth pebbles on the beach. Parking is up the hill from the beach. There are bathroom facilities as well as water. The beach is accessed by the sidewalk next to the road you drove in on. There is handicap parking down by the beach but it is for drop off purposes only.
