My family and I needed a way to break up the day on a long road trip. This is a wonderful place to do just that. However, if you wanted to make a day of it, you could easily do that, too. There are Lower Falls, Middle Falls and Upper Falls. The Lower Falls are the most accessible and user-friendly. There is a parking area and about 40-50 stairs you climb down to to get the Falls. The water is chillllllly! I highly recommend water shoes or some sort. There is a lower deep pool area, but it is not easy to get to. You can jump off the cliff (we saw some doing that) or climb down a very narrow cliff. We also saw some people fishing, too. It is allowed but you are not allowed to clean the fish in the falls.

The Middle Falls is gorgeous, but I would do it with older children. There is a much steeper path you climb down and getting into the water is more challenging. It can be done though and many others were a testament to that.

We saw some dogs on a leash and they were in the water with their owners. People who spent the day there brought coolers and chairs.

No matter how much time you have, this is a great place to visit. My family and I spent about an hour - just enough time to get out the wiggles and get back on the road. But my kids would have easily spent the whole day climbing on and off the rocks and playing in the water.

The entire trek from the parking lot to the top of the third falls and back down again takes about 90 minutes, depending on how fast you walk or how many times you stop. The second falls is easily the most beautiful. I would have given this walking tour a five-star rating if not for about a 20-foot section just before the upper falls that is only about 2-3 feet wide with a sheer drop off on the righthand side. One slip and you’re going to be rolling down a massive hill that could be deadly. I’m really surprised the park service hasn’t addressed this potential safety hazard, as it could be very dangerous for parents with small kids or the elderly. Just before this area there are guard rails for another treacherous section. The park service needs to add guard rails or at least make this section much wider. Other than that, the entire journey is fun and breathtaking.

Beautiful views! We navigated pretty easily to these falls, there’s parking for each of them with restrooms. We parked at the upper falls and started on the trail to the middle. We hiked down, climbed some rocks, and sat at the bottom of the upper falls for a moment. It was very peaceful here as the access to this one is not easy. Most people were viewing from the trail. The walk down to the middle falls isn’t too bad. It was a little busier here but I loved this one! This one is a little easier to climb through the rocks to get close. Makes for beautiful pictures. The path continues to the camp ground about half a mile but there isn’t a clear path to the lower falls. We walked back up to the upper and drove to lower. This one was packed, the bathrooms are pretty bad here. It’s def the most Water accessible and a nice place to actually relax for a while, the water is cold but beautiful! Needless to say by the end of the day I’ve worked muscles I didn’t know I had! We made the day of it and I highly recommend.

This is a picture-perfect location to visit if you happen to be visiting the Mount Shasta/McCloud area. Pleasant hiking along a beautiful (swift & cold) free-flowing Nor Cal river. Majestic waterfalls. It’s easily accessible from highway 89 and offers swimming/dipping, seasonal fishing (torture & release, barbless only, license required) and hiking recreational options.
Which is why it is also often overrun with people, (especially during the summer months). The negative impacts of over-visitation include erosive user-created trail shortcuts to the river, litter and left-behind clothing, and everyone’s favorite: frequently messy toilet facilities. (What exactly happened in there?!?!)
So, if you happen visit here and are reading this, please don’t be THAT irresponsible and messy person. The world is a better place for considerate you!
The middle and lower falls tend to be a serious free-for-all mob scene on the really hot summer days, so get there early to stake out one of the better spots...
CAUTION: Each season it seems someone tragically jumps off one of the cliffs into a pool below without first checking to see how the submerged boulders at the river bottom have shifted during spring runoff, requiring that other summer rite of passage: A Med Evac
Bottom line: McCloud Falls is a beautiful, if over-loved place, and definitely worth a visit. If you go, “leave only footprints and take only memories”. Have fun!

The falls are special any time of the year, but especially so in the Fall when the leaves turn red and yellow, and the cool mountain air reminds everyone winter is around the corner. Nice parking, picnic area, and grills at Lower falls, where you can begin the nice hike up to Middle and Upper falls. Well done.Fishing is decent above Upper Falls, but mostly small ones - still very scenic.

McCloud falls was a fairly easy hike but absolutely breathtaking. Highly recommend taking the time to go. The falls were beautiful but so was the surrounding scenery.

We began at the lower falls, walked to the middle falls and then to the upper falls, then turned around and walked back to the car located at the parking section of lower falls.

In July the trails was mostly shaded. The trail was very dusty.

When we arrived the rangers were stocking the top section with fish.

Beautiful scenery!

We passed some lovely camping sites along the way.

Bathrooms available.

The 3 falls are situated in a pretty park where you can drive or walk to the various segments. Free parking, picnic tables and toilets.
However, I got lost several times trying to find the right turn off the main road, despite asking directions a couple of times. Perhaps this was partially due to driving & navigating solo with a Google map & no GPS.
