We kayaked a stretch of the Trinity River recently, putting in just south of downtown Dallas. The water is clean, clear to about 18 inches down, and moving well even after a long period without rain. It's deep, and very swift in places--don't let the placid surface fool you, there's a strong current..We saw cranes, herons, huge fish, turtles, lots of raccoon tracks, deer tracks and evidence of beaver. There are interesting old historical fixtures along the way, old bridges, etc. It was peaceful and we had the river to ourselves. There are some areas of little rapids, even at the put-in at the Santa Fe Trestle Bridge. It's a great day trip for kayakers or canoers. Takes about 2 1/2 hours to get to the public boat ramp take-out at Loop 12. Don't go any farther--we went all the way to I-20 and nearly lost a kayak trying to get out at the steep, slippery clay banks. Fast moving current there too, would be dangerous in higher water. Bring your kayak for a fun day trip, or contact one of the area outfitters and rent one! Remember your sunscreen, shoes and lots of water.

A group of us wanted to float the Trinity in Dallas. We contacted Trinity River Expeditions for kayak and canoe rentals. The owner, Charles, will meet you, drive you to your starting point, and then pick you up at your ending point. It's great! Rentals were like $35/single-person kayak and $50/2 person canoe.

We packed a cooler full of food/drinks, stuck it in the canoe, and paddled away!

The Trinity was running slow that day, so it was about a 4 hour trip, plus we went ashore for lunch at a sandy beach area about midway.

We saw only one other family on the river and a few fisherman, but otherwise enjoyed the river all to ourselves. We saw a couple beavers scurry out of the way, and egrets and kingfisher birds.

Great way to enjoy the Trinity, instead of just crossing over it as you head out of Dallas.

This year, there has been a 'monsoon' season with weeks of rain. That means the trickle of water that is usually the Trinity River swelled to fill the banks...there really is a river. One of the best places to see the river is the pedestrian walkway at the Margaret Hunt Bridge or any of the highways (183, 35) that cross the river. 2015 is a banner year to have a photo of the river reaching it's full width.

Did the popular Pigeon Point run last week. Early in the season so we had the river to ourselves. A gorgeous setting and our guide Bill was wonderful and made the experience safe and fun. Great trip for those with little to moderate whitewater experience. I'd feel comfortable bringing kids 5+ on this one. We will certainly be using Trinity River Rafting again down the road.

By the time that we visited this area, there is almost no water. In the evening you can enjoy the view of Dallas skyline and also the reflection on the water. We will be back again to do the trail.

The Trinity River is beautiful to drive, but you have to experience it from the river. There's no better way then on a raft. There is not too many difficult rapids, so this was a great experience for our whole family. The guide encouraged us to jump in the river in the many slow spots and even cliff dive or float the river out of the boat. the guide was great and the price was very affordable.

Several of us just finished a day-long run on the Trinity with this company - 13 miles of whitewater with terrific class III rapids. Our guide this time was Glen, but we've had a different guide each time and they are all experts in providing education, fun, thrills and safety. The river was fast this time so our 6 hour run was done in about 4.5 hours (including lunch). So Glen asked if we wanted to continue on further down the river and we all said yes. Since this would take us past the take-out beach, he arranged for a shuttle on the other end to get us back to our cars. A great day on the river.

We are a family of five with older kids and were slightly nervous never having white water rafted before. Our guide was hugely experienced and guided us through the increasingly difficult rapids safely as well as showing us the best stop off spots for swimming and rock jumping. The lunch provided was also really delicious. Overall a really brilliant trip.
