Beautiful… just beautiful. I can see why this is such a highly recommend route to and from the GC via Phoenix. We did not go through this route on the way to GC BUT we came through it on the way back from the GC to Sedona and OMG- going down definitely is better than going up. It is scary with the road and blind spots… but if you take your time- you’ll be good. The views are to die for. Breath taking and just beautiful!!

This is perhaps THE most scenic drive in the USA. Really! Its is truly amazing. Make sure you drive it FROM Flagstaff to Sedona, ie downhill. Its amazing. I put it right up there with Rt 1 on the west coast. No really!

As mentioned in a previous review, this scenic drive has 2 distinct sections. Prescott to Jerome has lots of turns and major elevation changes, nice valley views. We spent half a day wandering around Jerome, tourist shopping, having lunch and doing a wine tasting. Next time we come I'd like to go to the mining museum. Sedona to Flagstaff is just a road that goes through a canyon. What's the big deal? Way more pleasurable than being on the interstate, but that goes without saying, doesn't it? There are great stops and hikes in this canyon and I will write reviews on those separately. If you scan the reviews for this scenic drive, you'll notice that the people who don't like the road are from Maryland and Florida. FLATLANDERS! If you're a motorcyclist or from the Rocky Mountain states, it's a perfectly normal mountain road.

I have a debilitating fear of higher elevations and was a wreck the entire drive from “the top.” You will read reviews that say that it “is not scary.” If you have ANY fear of heights, watch the videos coming both directions and magnify your reaction by one hundred.
HOWEVER, the ride from 17 to 189 was gorgeous and not as harrowing. Takes longer (of course), but my choice was to either book a ticket for a flight back to Vegas OR take the longer route.

First of all, Arizona 89A is really divided into two sections- Prescott to Sedona which is what this review is intended for, and then Sedona- Flagstaff. That section follows Oak Creek Canyon and is covered under that listing, although many people have included it here under Jerome. From the Prescott Valley, the two lane paved road quickly climbs thousands of feet up the backside of Mingus Mountain. From the summit, it switchbacks even quicker down and around to Jerome. We were amused to see an official green road sign perched on the mountainside above Jerome welcoming us to the Verde Valley. How did they determine it begins at that particular spot when you still have a long ways down? Jerome is a series of 15 mph hairpin turns so watch for people and traffic. The wife might wear out that right side brake before you finally get down to the bottom and come into Clarksdale and another stupid roundabout.

My brother & I took the scenic route from Sedona to Flagstaff along AZ 89a. It's only about 30 miles, and takes about 45 to 50 minutes, but the wonderful mountain scenery is worth the time!
The Oak Creek Vista Overlook is a perfect place to stop and check out the view!
Enjoy!

Drove from Cottonwood to Prescott through Jerome. The road is twisty and winding and not much fun for the driver.

Take the extra 15 mins to soak in the views along this Canyon route. Breathtaking scenery along the way. The topography changes and you get a sense of the diversity of Arizona

Driving from Sedona AZ and back to Prescott is definitely the way to go. With all of the hairpin turns and switchbacks, it is better to go up than down. Jerome is literally built on many steep cliffs, and winding your way up the rode is breathtaking and beautiful.

We first drove from Flagstaff to Sedona on AZ 89A by somewhat of a mistake. We were looking for an alternative to the interstate to take us back to Sedona after a day at the Grand Canyon. It was dusk and then dark by the time we got to the end of the road. We came back the next day and drove it in day light and it was incredible. The views of Oak Creek Canyon are breath taking, there are several little areas to stop along the way- but be forewarned you need a fee pass at each spot or pay to enter several sites. We stopped at the steel bridge closer to Sedona and walked to the edge and took picture of Oak Creek Canyon and it was great. I recommend this drive, it is so beautiful, and the view is very different then the red rocks of Sedona. NOTE: When you come out on the south end into Sedona the views of the red rocks are outstanding. Worth the drive and recommend it!

Is the road safe for 43ft fifth wheel?
Written May 23, 2018
I don’t know! I would think uphill & around narrow turns you’d have issues. As far as the road condition- it was nicely paved but only one lane in each direction. Kinda tight in some spots!

Is it safe for a 34 foot motorhome towing a car? I love doing the mountain roads if there are not rock out crops at the edge of the highway. Diesel pusher can handle the grades.
Written April 9, 2018
Yes, definitely. We saw many. Most of the travel is wide and very open country.

Is this road safe and smooth for a rental car?
Written February 9, 2018
Yes, this road is a state highway that is paved the entire length. It is a smooth drive and completely safe for all vehicles. Only on a few occasions, when there has been a heavy snowfall during winter, is this road closed. Enjoy!

How long would you plan to take if driving from Flagstaff to Sedona? Maps says approx. 45min, but just wondering considering the difficult drive, photo ops, etc?
Written September 30, 2016
The trip from Flagstaff to Sedona is not very long at all. Some p.arts of the road are narrow. I like driving so I took my time and made many photo stops along the way.
