How many places can you go in the world that are untouched? Looking at the landscape in the Marlborough Sounds it was so soothing to the soul to see so much green untouched land.
It’s a great place to unplug, breathe and actually live for...More
Probably the best moment of our trip to NZ was when our ferry from the North Island entered the Sound. The scenery literally took my breath away and from the awed silence of the other passengers, I don’t think I was the only one.
Having been to both the Milford and Doubtful sounds this was by far better. We completed it on the Mail Boat and the Interisland Ferry and enjoyed every minute. Yes, doubtful and Milford may be more dramatic, but Marlborough Sound is more picturesque and doesn't...More
This is a truly spectacular area of New Zealand which would rate highly amongst other areas like Croatia and the Greek Islands. If travelling by Ferry there are bush covered hills with small bays and on a good day very blue seas. The trip from...More
Have lived in NZ for 10 years and never been before. I had high hopes for my stay in the sounds and I wasn’t disappointed. This part of NZ should be on everybody’s to do list. Just make sure you give yourself time to enjoy...More
I am so relaxed i can barely puck up the energy to write this review. I am also in two minds because i don't want to share the sounds.

Seeking help with the last several days of our trip! (4 Replies)
Hi, I am seeking some friendly advice for the final leg of our trip, driving from Wellington to Auckland in early December. The beginning of out trip looks like this: Auckland 2 nights Rotorua 2 nights Whakatane 1 night Gisborne 2 nights Napier 3 nights Wellington 2 nights Marlborough Sounds 4 nights We will take the ferry to Wellington in the morning, arriving about 1 pm on the 6th. We depart from Auckland on 10 Dec about mid day. Could we drive to Tongario on the 6th and...More

Our Picton to Wellington ferry docked about 2pm. We then drove 2 hours north into Foxton Beach. What a wonderful place for an overnight, and most convenient! Getting to this location at 4pm gave us time to settle into our motel, explore the beach and estuary walks, and sort our dinner plans out. Arriving Wellington at 1pm, and planning to drive into Tongariro NP is almost too far. That's a 3.5 hour drive to Ohakune, but you will require a rest stop midway, say Bulls or Taihape. Do'able,...More
Car Parking in Picton for Marlborough Sounds (3 Replies)
We are currently planning a trip to NZ in 2012 and will be flying into Queenstown, hiring a car and driving up to Auckland. Is there anywhere we can leave the car in Picton whilst we do a 3 day trip to the Queen Charlotte Track. It seems to be cheaper to book for 16 days than two separate hires of 7 days and 6 days.

The car park by the water taxi office is the best place to leave your car for a few days. It costs $2 per day and is quite safe. I have never heard of any break ins or damage.
tips on return from south island (4 Replies)
Just returned from 17 days in the south island with my husband and had an amazing time. Firstly, I definitely would not recommend rushing it, less than two weeks there would have felt rushed and don't think we have really missed out by skipping the north island. Flew in and out of Christchurch. Itinerary below: Kaikoura one night: Would have missed this in retrospect. Whales gave us sea sickness and town nice but nothing special Blenheim 2 nights: Blenheim and Renwick towns are boring...More

Hi Charlotte Thanks for your post. We leave in 3 weeks and will be doing a lot of the same things you did. Did you prebook your Abel Tasman kayak and walking trips or organise them when you got there? We have 2 days in Nelson and plan to spend 1 day in Abel Tasman but haven't booked any tours/trips yet. We have 2 kids (9 and 11) and so aren't really sure what they will be able to do. What did you mean when you said that Franz Josef was hard to compare to Fox? We are planning a 1/2 day hike...More
