It is a bit pricey to go in, $50 for two adults and a 4 year old.
Â
However it is quite spectacular, interesting, attractive and enjoyable to walk around exploring the works of art. It reminds me of Antoni Gaud۪̉s work.
Â
It is up a very steep drive. No parking at the top.
Â
The garden is filled with sculptures that the artist has created with mosaic tiles. She lives there onsite.
Â
The garden itself is quite steep too. Wouldn’t recommend it to push chairs or wheelchairs sorry.
Â
I had my very inquisitive two year old with us and it was a bit hectic with her, full anxiety levels as she wanted to touch everything. And upon entry you are told not to touch or sit on anything. Just a heads up!
Â
Lovely thing to do for half an hour or so.

Got to the artist’s garden about 3:40 and was told It closed at 4. Was rushed through as it closed at 4 so we had to whizz through. It was $60 for our family of five which is pricey as others have stated but the craft that the artist has used on all her statues and paths in the garden is truly incredible. The house is also amazing and a nice way to while away an afternoon. Should be noted that the garden is up a very steep driveway and much of the garden is also on a hillside so people going need to be aware of the need to do stairs.

We didn’t know what to expect at The Giants House but we were so glad we gave it a go and went inside. The mosaics are really fantastic and so creative. The garden is very beautiful and has an incredible variety of flowers, plants, and fruit trees. I couldn’t stop taking photos!
It was interesting to watch the DVD in the gallery where the artist, Josie Martin, is interviewed about her work. Highly recommend visiting The Giants House and it’s well worth the $20 admission fee.

Lovely gardens, loved the ceramic piano on the front lawn of a beautiful old home. Some of the ceramic subjects are a little odd-looking but on the whole the colours and patterns are amazing. There are plenty of places to sit and just look around. It's expensive at $22.50 and I know several people who weren't prepared to pay this - they missed a great experience but the decision is understandable.

I absolutely loved this garden and the colour, obvious passion that has been put into this labour of love.
The lovely house is located a short somewhat steep walk from the village up a steep driveway so you need to be physically fit to get there but no mountaineer.
The hours are limited so check opening hours and there is a nominal $20 entrance fee.
The garden is so vibrant both the flowers and the mosaics that you dont know where to look first.
The house itself is a private residence and looks amazing too.
Took so many photos and appreciate the work involved.
Thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

Stunning mosaic works of art woven into a garden tapestry.
There’s a steep walkway and though there’s a drop off point close to the top entry but deep stairs dominate the walkways so this is not recommended for those with mobility difficulties and I also would not recommend it for young families - children will consider the bright art pieces to be playground equipment and it would be a trial for parents to keep them off the statues and out of the water.
Check your foot gear, especially in wet weather as the mosaic work could be quite slippery.
This would be appealing to any person who finds art, gardens, creativity or beauty attractive.

Travelled from Australia to New Zealand on the Golden Princess (8th to 25th January 2020) and this tour 'WAS" to be the highlight of my port visit to Akaroa.
Lady at the front counter was rude, and advised us to go look around - without any directions. She seems annoyed that ANOTHER cruise tour had arrived.
Once closer to the actual house - another lady initially told us we were forbidden to enter until she realised we were part of the Princess Cruises Tour Group. Lady then allowed us to enter but provided NO HISTORY OR INFORMATION basically just told us don't touch anything and it was a private residence. Would have loved to known more about the artist and the meanings behind the art.
Outside the place was overcrowded, you couldn't get to fully see anything, let alone take a picture of the art. All path ways were crowded with people and you spent ages waiting to see anything.

We had no expectation as we walked into Josie Martin's master piece as we were not aware of her work. We were imagining a few pieces of handcraft in a garden setting. This is not what this is. This wonderland of exquisitely placed art deserves far more recognition than it has received and should be promoted as a major drawcard for visiting Akaroa. The colours are carefully chosen by the artist and are sublime.
This is a work done by a skilled colourist. Her many self-referenced works are joyous, fairitale-like and skillfully set in-amongst companion planting. This place speaks to the imagination as all good art should. I hope this art installation will receive the international recognition it deserves one day. Shame on those Kiwi visitors that gave this work of art a poor review. This surely is sacrilege and the words of Philistines. Go and see this. You should be blown away.

A beautiful experience of Josie's fantastic sculpture garden. We were in awe of the artistic talent, colour and beauty of the garden and art gallery. We loved it!
We really appreciated the fun and artistry of the sculptures and beautifully kept garden and vegetables,
We would recommend a visit for both adults and chlidren.

When we rocked up here I wondered about the cost and value we might receive ($22.50 adults I think, and $20 for us oldies) but I worried unnecessarily - it was worth at least that! Unfortunately we'd left it late in the day (it closes at 4) so we only had 45 minutes to spend there, we could have spent hours! Absolutely amazing work by Josie Martin - hints of Gaudi and Hundertwasser but only hints, she is mistress of her own style. Difficult to pick out any specific pieces but her Adam and Eve and the piano on the front lawn would be hard to beat. Go as soon as you can and enjoy - kids will love it too. Cafe looked good but we were too late to try it!

Arriving by tendered cruise ship Nov 3/19. Do you know how far a walk it is from the wharf to the Giant's House? Will the gardens be in bloom this time of year? Is there still a free shuttle service. And how long is the average tour within the Giant's House property? Thanks

It can be walked, we are in our sixties and made it, we took a couple of short rests but it can be done, once into town and that is easy from the jetty, it is up hill to the giants house, the last bit quite steep, have water and good walking shoes, it is quite a scenic walk.

Can you please tell me how far apart is ko tane garden and giant house please and thank you
James B
Newcastle, Australia534 contributions
The Garden of Tane and the Giants House are about 30 - 40 minutes walking time apart.
To go to the Giants House you turn left from the jetty and head through the village and take a right turn up the hill - about 25 minutes. Look at the map they will give you to see the street you take.
The Garden of Tane is in the other direction from the jetty exit so depending on how much time you have you may need to choose between the two.
Are you allowed to bring dogs here?

Hi Josie, we will be in Akaroa in december 2017 by Cruise ship. I use a small mobility scooter, with small wheels. Would it be possible for me to visit the garden and house? I can walk short distances.
Josie M
Akaroa, New Zealand5 contributions
Hello Francis,
First of all sorry this response is so late, just saw your question.
Its is possible for you to come to the garden, but you will probably not be able to access the top parts of the garden, but you will be able to see most of it from the bottom lawn. The driveway is quite steep, not sure if the scooter would be able to come up it. But, if it can the person on the entrance will be able to open the driveway gate for you, so no steeps to access the bottom portion of the garden. Hope to see you at The Giants House and I hope this information helps.
Kind Regards
Josie

Hello,
You can drive all the way to the top of the drive, just ask the lady on the gate, who will open the gate for you...the bottom part of the garden is flat (with grass and gravel) and you can see most of the garden from the bottom. and the garden cafe is at the bottom..
There are pictures on my website thegiantshouse
Hope that helps, and hope to see you here..
Kind regards
