Dolphins and penguins and seals, oh my! After having enjoyed many of the trips Akaroa has to offer, there is one stand out that continues to exceed the others...FOX II Sailing! From past trips, I can honestly say that Captain Roy and his crew consistently have provided a five-star experience from the moment one steps on-board. Not only is the FOX II a historical wonder in her own right, but the enthusiasm with which Roy imparts the history of wonderful little Akaroa, her legends, her harbor and the surrounding area to his passengers is contagious! His knowledge of the abundant wildlife is impressive and, as per usual, his "sailing playlist" created a magical atmosphere for guests and Hector dolphins alike:) What an absolutely beautiful day on one of the most beautiful ships I've ever sailed on. If you do nothing else while you're visiting Akaroa, DO THIS, it's one for the bucket list!

Fox II is a classic gaff-rigged sailing boat with a long history. Depending on the conditions, parts of the trip can be made the under sail alone. The tours of Akaroa Harbour showcase the dramatic scenery, bird and animal life. The crew pause and play music to attract Hector's dolphins (they seemed to like Enya). Birds include little penguins, shearwaters and giant petrels. The skipper gives occasional snippets of natural and human history to make the trips more educational. It's a winning combination.

Just landed from a fabulous 3 hour return cruise from Akaroa harbour and into the South Pacific Ocean. The Captain was wonderfully informative throughout and his crew great to watch as they jumped about setting the sails. We did see blue penguin, albatross, Hector dolphin and lots of shag.

A very pleasant experience swapping between motor and sail - so peaceful bobbing about on the ocean waves. An awesome trip.

I think we got super lucky with this. We saw little blue penguins, black back gulls, red bill gulls, tern, and two types of shag. We saw about a dozen Hector dolphins. We saw seals and a couple of stray sheep. To cap it off we were privledged to see multiple giant albatross, and I am sure I have missed some others. We saw some extraordinary geology including some exposed by the Australian navy. There was so much going on that Captain Roy and in his excitement was unable to be silent for long.

Fox 2, because it is heavily built, and sails quietly, has to be is the best vessel in Akaroa Harbour to see the great beauty the ocean has to offer.

Just do it. Already.

Fox II is definitely recommended - we only saw a few dolphins and seals but despite that the whole experience was well worthwhile. Roy's commentary was very interesting, weaving history and present day together. At least half of the three hour experience was under sail, he played music to attract the dolphins - we enjoyed the whole trip. Well done, and thank you.

Today my family from Nederland and I sailed with Captain Roy on the Oldest Cutter (Fox 2) in New Zealand out from the Akaroa harbour. We saw hector dolphins, fur seals, blue penguins and multiple sea bird varieties. Roy began to play a variety of music as we sailed as the dolphins zipped in and out of the waves around the boat. Roy and his crew were fantastic.

This was an excellent experience combining sailing with nature watching. The sailing was incredible on the open water - excellent skipper and crew- informative and friendly. Drinks available to purchase on board and included in price is a welcome hot drink and biscuit near the end. Highlight was the precious hector dolphins who chose to swim alongside us. I’ve done other tours in Alaric and chose this to share with my international friend and it was an absolute highlight for him

Thanks for your nice review Wendy. Sounds like you had a nice trip... sailing, nature watching, open water sailing, excellent crew, informative etc. They only thing I didn't like was the 4/5 rating. I wish we were able to give you a better result. Please feel free to come again, I am sure we can do better. Thanks again. Roy Skipper/Owner.

What a knowledgeable man Roy is. We got to not only hang out on his lovely boat, but really learn about the history of Akaroa.
Our minds were blown when he cut the engine to play music and up popped a pod of dolphins.
The tea/coffee and biscuits was a lovely touch too.
Thoroughly recommend this trip.

We were blown away in every sense by our trip on Fox 2. The skipper kept us amused on the outward trip with interesting information about Akaroa and its history. As it got colder and more windy, we were offered cosy jackets to keep us warm, which was just fantastic. Without them, the trip would have been a struggle for some of us!
We were privileged to see 3 different types of shag, a little blue penguin, an albatross, fur seals and an incredible display by a pod of Hector's dolphins.
On the return journey we were offered hot drinks and cookies, which were very well received and a nice gesture to round off a never to be forgotten trip. Thank you!

I can not say enough about the experience. And the dolphins! It was amazing how the dolphins swam and played all around the boat. And the music made the experience even better! The cliffs were incredible and the cathedral too. Again the music added so much. We did see seals. Disappointed that we didn’t get to see the penguins because of the weather. But everything else was great. The crew was very friendly. And hot chocolate was served.
