We did the tour on a very wet, overcast day in Akaroa but were not disappointed. No sooner had we set off when we saw many of the small Hector's Dolphins swimming around and in front of the boat. The boat was very comfortable and...More

We primarily booked this trip because of the dolphin spotting dog on board (we're missing our dog) and we were lucky enough to not only have Sydney the Spoodle but accompanying him was his rookie apprentice Albie, a 20 week old Springer Spaniel. The family...More

Welcome to the Kiwi forum :) You can catch a bus to Akaroa and Kaikoura - these can be done as a day trip from Chch or you can stay the night or several nights. Have you checked with the airline that you are able to fly a long haul flight on your own without an adult? Plus an interesting fact I just stumbled across - many motels/hotels/hostels around the world require a guest to be at least 18 years of age to reserve a room. Under 18's can stay only if accompanied by a person aged...More

Hello My husband and I are first-time visitors to NZ and we will be in Nov this year. Here's our initial itinerary, hope you guys can provide some advice. We are not great at driving, hence we are expecting the drives to take slightly longer than usual. We are more than happy to omit some places if everything looks rushed. Day 1: Arrive in Auckland airport, visit Waitomo glow caves after checking in Day 2: Sightseeing in Auckland, depart for evening flight to CHC Day 3: Visit...More

Don't drive anywhere on day 1, you will be tired and a hazard to yourself and other road users. I'm not sure I'd drive all the way to Dunedin, you have no time to look around, explore the Otago Peninsula etc. I'd be inclined to drop this and use this for a rest day in Auckland. You need to swap days 9&10 around as there's no point in driving from Queenstown to Wanaka and then backtracking to Arrowtown. Where are you staying on day 11? Is F&E free and easy? No Milford Sound? ...More
Akaroa Boat Trips - Black Cat or Akaroa Dolphins? (4 Replies)
I plan to visit Akaroa at the end of January as a day trip from Christchurch. I'll be picking up my rental car in the morning (after 2 days in Christchurch to get over jet lag). Both companies seem to have very similar cruises according to their websites - any insight on differences? I am thinking that even though it's still five months out I should prebook as it's high season. I'm not sure of the timing - late morning or early afternoon, as I also want to visit the Giant's House.

Yes do book ASAP, esp if you are visiting on a cruise ship day as there might be several hundred passengers looking for a cruise too ;-( I have taken the Black Cat cruise a few times & it is a great day out. I can't help with points of difference, and I don't think the time will make any difference, except that you need to allow enough time between checking out your rental car & the 90 min drive, and time to find a parking place & walk tot wharf ....
