We often take the boat over when the weather is right. Given the randomness of when the seals are there, I wouldn't do an organised tour or suggest it to new visitors, there are better things to spend your money on. If you know someone with a boat to go with, great! It's not so great to moor off the island when a few party boats are there. They have scant consideration for others wanting to enjoy nature and the peace and quiet of the island.

Only a 20 minute boat ride across the ocean to the small limestone island of Carnac where we swam and snorkeled with the sea lions. The seals were playful and amazing as they swam around our group, frolicking and jumping out of the water. We went with West End Charters, had a BBQ lunch and spent several pleasant hours swimming and snorkeling in the blue waters.

There is an illogicality here. To get to Carnac Island you need to jump on a charter boat because there is no regular transport going to the island. And this costs more money that a ferry ride to Rottnest Island unless you have lots of friend to chip in money.

And when you get to Carnac Island, on a charter boat, you can swim in the water, but you can't get onto the island. It is against the law. Of course you could go on a private vessel and that would be fine and legal.

I know: illogical!

Drum roll and slow clap.....welcome to the stupidity of Western Australian laws and the ineptitude of lawmakers in tourism!

My rant aside, Carnac is an amazing location, closer than Rottnest Island (45 minutes versus 1.25 horus) and an easier journey to make by boat because of the wind which is generally in your face on the way out and behind you on the way home.

The water is gorgeous and turquoise, teeming with herring and the other "quick and easy catches". Seals often lie on the white sandy beach sunning themselves, but they often flop into the water and swim up to you which is an awesome experience once you realise the "dark shape" close to you is a seal and not a shark!

The island is riddled with Tiger Snakes, which is a good reason to avoid going inland, even if you could, but if you wanted a truly peaceful say on the water, I rate Carnac up there on par with Rottnest

I took 10 visitors from Melb on the 4 hour snorkelling tour today and it was disappointing on every level. Granted the weather was less than perfect, but I am finding it difficult to put any sort of positive spin on the experience. We saw a few seals and sea lions from a distance and had high hopes of seeing something interesting when we began our snorkelling. Absolutely no instruction or advice was given and... we saw nothing but seaweed. Upon returning to the boat after about 15 minutes in the water we overheard the “dive master” remarking that we could have snorkelled close to some caves where there were crayfish, but no suggestions were given prior to the swim. We had expected some guidance and I actually thought the ‘dive master’ would enter the water with us. The water was cold and despite the advertised ‘wetsuits are provided’ none were offered.
The captain told an interesting tale about the snakes on Carnac Island, but again this information was gained purely by chance. On poor weather days an interesting commentary and acknowledgement of the conditions, may have lessened the disappointment.
I have a constant stream of visitors from interstate and will never, ever suggest a Heron Charters snorkelling tour again.
Thank you for asking for my feedback.

my dad took me there on his boat and while the island is really nice.. beware the tiger snakes and seals. I saw the large amount of seals that are known to be there.. but I did not spy the snakes that are reputed to be there. The seals there are WILD animals.. they can bite you.. so be careful.. best to leave them be and watch from your boat. its a beautiful place best left to the animals..

I went with Freo Dive on a 3.5hr Snorkelling Cruise. It was fantastic. The boat was big enough to handle choppy seas and the 30 people on board. The staff were very friendly and well organised. They provided good equipment if you didn't have any. The location where we dropped anchor was great with lots of coves and rocky outcrops to explore and the fish were in abundance. And the food for lunch was just right after a couple of hours swimming around. (I am not fit but swimming in such a beautiful place for a couple of hours was not hard to do) - Children would love it too as long as they can swim.

Our friends took us to Carnac Island on their boat. It was a magical day and the water was crystal clear. We docked and put on our snorkel gear and dived in. We were not in the water long swimming to the shore when a friendly sea lion came to play, this was wonderful, then it would settle on the bottom just looking at you to swim again, think it liked toes lol. Later on, sever more sea lions came into the water and swam in the kelp beds they are just so beautiful and graceful. Our girls loved it. This is a fully protected nature reserve and habitat for these rare Australian Sea Lions. It is also a breeding area for many seabirds. This Island is unique and very special.

Tucked in behind all the water front attractions right in the heart of Freo! Protected swimming, cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops. Don't forget the art galleries and museums all right there also. Great spot and must see and swim in summer.
