Description:

Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions...

Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

Always popular with overseas and interstate visitors, no trip to Perth would be complete without the prison visit. There are several tours on offer including the tunnels and the torchlight tour. We did the Great Escape and the Doing Time tour. These tours often run back to back so that you can do both easily. You get a pretty comprehensive... More

I was really expecting great things when we did our nighttime 'Torchlight Tour'. Previous reviewers had raved about their experiences however ours was not great. I do think it came down to the luck of the drawer with guides. It was not scary and nobody else in our group of 35 seemed overly surprised either. Certain elements added a little... More

Fremantle Prison, sometimes referred to as Fremantle Gaol or Fremantle Jail, is a former Australian prison in Fremantle, Western Australia. The six-hectare (15-acre) site includes the prison cellblocks, gatehouse, perimeter walls, cottages, and tunnels. Initially known as the Convict Establishment or The Establishment, it was constructed as a prison for convicts, using convict labour, between 1851 and 1859. The prison... More

This tour should really follow the "doing time" tour. This is a lot of stories and outdoor locations. We really enjoyed it and our guide Steve was a great story teller. We had good weather which helped. This tour might not work so well in the rain.

If you have been wondering how a prison looks like and what take place inside, this is a worthwhile visit. You get to see the cells, kitchen, gathering area, gallows. The guide was informational, and introduced us to some of the riots that happened in this prison before it was decommissioned. Do visit :)

Went on the afternoon Doing Time Tour with our designated guide, Ben. Without a doubt, this is the highlight of my Fremantle trip. The guide was amazing, spoke in a very engaging and charismatic way, had the facts and history of the prison at his fingertips, made alot of jokes that would help people remember the stories about this important... I have lived in Perth for over 25 years and my wife and I visited Fremantle Prison for the first time last week. It was a interesting place with a great history. Our guide (James) was informative, interesting and friendly. If you are in the Fremantle area the prison is a great place to visit.

We opted for the night tour as we only had 24hrs in Fremantle and the day was taken up with a visit to Rottnest Island - but this is definitely the best tour to do. The guide is very amusing and there are a couple of 'surprises' on the 1.5hr tour to keep everyone in suspense. This was one of... More

I had been to Freemantle before but never the prison. What an oversight. We had the guided tour from an ex prison guard. He was superbly informative, interesting and entertaining in equal amounts. A truly fascinating place. So many different tours available. Including underground canoeing. Next time.

Our group of 4 consisting of my parents, my 14 yr old son and myself did the Doing Time tour. The tour was educational and it was very interesting to see the inside of an actual prison. We could not help feeling empathy for the prisoners who had stayed there as the living conditions were quite bad. Highly recommended.
