Description:

Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions...

Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

For $7 per student, and $20 per adult this tour is very interesting, entertaining and great value. We had Tour Guide James Fisher, who was Scottish but a tad Clint Eastwoodish. He was an actual Prison Guard and regaled us with great, real experience stories. It is one of the most interesting afternoons and I'd really recommend this tour.

This a a must do place to tour when visiting Freemantle. Just the start where the prisoners were first taken when they arrived then stripped is rather frightening. The history and conditions that had to be endured, including why it finally had to close due to the toileting issue, are so interesting, but must have been quite awful for the... More

Myself and my friend went to the Torchlit Prison tour at Freemantle prison and it was definitely a must do while in Perth/Freemantle! The prison is a fantastic build with a very rich and somewhat gruesome history. Our tour guide (Simon) was absolutely fantastic, and made the tour both very fun, informative and at times scary. I don't want to... More

This is worth visiting as it teaches you a lot about the history of the place and also gives a real feeling of the conditions endured but the inmates. Also we find out about what happened to some of the inmates which is very interested. John was our tour guide and was a great story teller too.

We found this to be an easy walk from or hotel. The architecture of this prison is a credit to the men who built it. We found names of inmates that matched our surname. Worth a visit.

The prison is a must see for visitors. Even people from WA dont realise what interest awaits them. Guides are great and are happy to be quizzed on further information. The biggest thrill is the underground exploration of the waterways which are beneath the city of Fremantle and the prison but be warned this is a tiny bit strenous with... More

Built for the convicts by the convicts :) The guided tours was a revelation as to how the inmates were treated and how they revolted for better amenities. A must do while at Fremantle

James was our guide through the prison and was excellent. He was able to answer all our questions and was very knowledgeable. Hard to believe this prison was still in use up to 20 years ago and a very tight Council vote saved it by three votes from being pulled down and becoming a Woolworths store. Now heritage listed. Great... More

I don't recall the name of the lady who took us on our tour but the stories she told and information she provided were great at providing a good insight into what happened behind those walls!
