Interesting piece of history

Directly under the Round house. A few signs about providing history details, so you get the understanding of its purpose. You wont spend too long here but I would suggest it is a must see.

Whalers tunnel

It is a tunnel, not that long, but cleverly built under the circumstances. Definitely worth seeing if you are in the vicinity, but don't make a special trip just to see this one thing. If you do go, set aside 1-2 hours and include the Round House, the Reserve etc.

Whalers tunnel

The tunnel's construction was made the below the Round House using prisoners for the labour. The tunnel is +/- 8 yards long and rock is of soft limestone.
The tunnel provided direct access from the beach to the Town of Fremantle (main street) for the sale of whale goods to the community

An Old Tunnel Under Renovation

Maybe the renovation, but the tunnel, built under the Roundhouse was in a poor state of maintenance. It was built back in the early 1800's (around 18304) as Bather's Beach (then called Whaler's Beach) which was a Whaling Station and the 50 meter tunnel was used to transport good into town.

Stepping back in time

This was an interesting walk from the city side of the tunnel out on to the beach. The story boards in the wall niches paint a good picture of what it was like for deckhands in early days unloading their ships and getting cargo ashore. Well worth taking the time to stroll through here.

Historical Shortcut

This tunnel is located under the Roundhouse and was constructed by the Fremantle Whaling Company in 1837 to allow the company easy access between Fremantle town and Bathers Beach.

A sense of history

Walk through to Bathers Beach. Atmospheric and exuding a sense of the past. Apparently the tunnel was used for access to the whaling boats.
