About
Rackstadmuseet is a museum dedicated to the artists who were part of the Rackstad artist colony by the beginning of the 20th century including Gustaf Fjaestad, Björn Ahlgrensson and Fritz Lindström among others. Arts and crafts has and has had an important role in the cultural landscape of Arvika and is included in the museum collections as well. Temporary exhibitions are continuously displayed, focusing on both historical and contemporary artists. During the summer months you can also visit the sculpture Christian Erikssons own studio with loads of artworks and furniture from the period. In the cafe you can allways eat homemade lunch or cakes during the museums opening hours.

For me, this was the most impressive art exposition ever. I was totally awed by the paintings of Gustav Fjaestad, the winter paintings and the water paintings. Breathtakingly beautiful. Also some of the other paintings and the textile works by Maja Fjaestad were lovely. The setting is very beautiful and the staff friendly. The modern exposition was an add-on ... we hardly spent time there.

What a gem this museum is!
This lovely place has something for everybody. The buildings are very interesting from an architectural and engineering aspect, as the “cottage” is built like a piece of perfect furniture. But the art is the real breath taker, and also very moving.
This marvellous place has something for everyone.
Don’t miss it!

The beautiful nature around Arvika must have been a great drawing card for the artists that flocked there in the 19th century and later. The museum is a showcase of what this diverse cluster of of painters, sculptors and craftsmen produced.

The main exhibition hall in this small museum features several impressive works by Gustaf Fjaestad, and I enclose a picture of his Winter Motive, which I found particularly attractive.

There are other buildings on the museum grounds and the "Brown House" contains a small, interesting art collection as well. We joined a guided tour of that house, but the charming guide unfortunately lacked a sense of what level of detail a lay audience can possible absorb.

The restaurant served a set, inexpensive and tasty lunch.

It all started with an artist an an artistcolony. And this brings culture and makes the place a much more interesting spot on the Earth. You can still feel the city is alive. Go to this museum and go to the arthall in the city. Listen to the story about the artists and their lives

Wonderful visit to the museum and grounds. We we’re all taken-care of and all of our questions answered. Curators speak excellent English and were very helpful. Cafe in museum had reasonable prices, tasty soup and delicious baked goods. Well worth the time and price for admission was surprisingly reasonable. Lovely garden spot in Arvika.

This collection of art is mainly from the local area and from the late 19th and early 20th century. This reflects a great flowering of original art, as artists abandonded Stockholm and let their creativity flourish in this beautiful country of lakes and forests. Some of these works rank with the best of their time. Artists like Fritz Lindstrom, Bjorn Ahlgrensson, Maia and Gustav Fjaestad and Ture Ander are exceptional. The museum holds many of their best works and they are beautifully displayed. Currently Lindstrom's masterpiece called 'Elden' (Fire) of four women in a group at the lakeside beside a fire is on show, on loan for 3 years from Karlstad. You have to see this wonderful painting! Temporary exhibitions are often very interesting and are held in a parallel room. In the basement are examples of historical crafts from the area, including some fine ceramics and woodwork. The whole museum has a lovely, quiet atmosphere and allows time and space for reflection. But if you feel hungry then do try the soups offered in the cafe at lunchtime, always very tasty, followed by wonderful home-baked tarts and cakes. There is also a shop that sells fine local craft pieces. A perfect way to spend a few enriching hours. You will want to return.

This museum features a review of some of the most important Swedish painters and craftsmen around the art deco period. There are both permanent and seasonal exhibitions. The guides are very knowledgeable. There is a good giftshop as well featuring works also by contemporary craftsmen in the area.

If you feel hungry you can get a good bowl of soup and some pastry as well at a moderate price.
