On the skyline of the pretty Moorish town of Tavira stands a strange construction. A cylindrical form on spindly legs with what appears to be a single eye that slowly turns to observe the town, it's presence like that of an alien spaceship from War of the Worlds. The cylinder however contains a delightful camera obscura, and in the cool darkened space it's revolving lens projects telescopic images of the town below onto a large concave screen. The commentator tells you that from ground level you cannot be seen as you observe the comings and goings of the street below. What fun then, when walking through the town, you become aware of the eye turning to face you and you face it, smile and wave at the surprised tourists inside.

Snooping on Tavira

An interesting 15/20 minute view over Tavira live. Nicely presented and very informative. Good value for money and something a bit different for all the family.

Visited during a stroll round Tavira. Converted from the town water tower a few years ago. On top of the hill near the church & castle for €3.50 this is fantastic value, adults will love the views & kids the "tricks" of picking up the images of cars driving along the road on a piece of paper!

Well, I knew the principle but had not visited a Camera Obscura since Edinburgh, many moons ago. The one in the pretty riverside town of Tavira makes very good use of an old water tower. It's well organised and you can either take the lift (elevator) to the top or climb the 50 or so steps and enjoy the view... More

The only time I have even heard mention of a Camera Obscura was in the film 'A Matter of Life or Death'. It is amazing to see one in the flesh. Using a redundant water tower to house the equipment is inspirational. Offers fabulous views of the town and surrounding countryside.

Fascinating, informative and entertaining. There are not many Camera Obscuras left in the world. Don't miss it.

A great way to learn about Tavira and very interesting the way that it is done. Beautiful views of Tavira as you climb the stairs rather than take the lift.

The first time we went to Tavira it was cloudy so the Camera Obscura wasn't working, but if it's a sunny day (it usually is) it is definitely worth a visit. You get to see the whole town from a bird's eye perspective and the commentary is really good too.
