Dating as far back as 1125, Ponte de Lima is known as the oldest Portuguese town. Its ramparts were built on the 14th century and the two remaining fortification towers. as well as a small part of the old walls, can still be seen and visited at the very center of this historic town. The towers of "São Paulo" (St. Paul) and of "Cadeia Velha" (Old Prison), connected by the remaining walls, are worth of a quick visit, as witnesses of Ponte de Lima's history and legend. The "Cadeia Velha" was used as a prison until 1860, being recently renovated into an art gallery and a tourist information center. Enjoy!

Very nice history and preservation. You can clearly see this without running and having the major information about the city.

We (like many others) came upon a set of stairs and were surprised to walk up and find a sort of second level to the town. Very cool, kids loved it! Made us wonder about times past... romantic and old.

This tower was quite interesting! It looked like a fortress and at the same time I found a door that looked more like a prison. I found out that this is a remain of the old Medieval fortifications. However, it was also used later on as a prison as well until the 1860s. It made sense!
Still it looks quite majestic with its tower that looks mostly as a castle. I liked it! Worthwhile to see!

Torre da Cadeia Velha, has served like his name is telling us as a prison (Torre = tower) and (Cadeia = prison) this until the 1960 of the past century.
From that time they turned into a place with function of Regional Historical Arquiver.
And today it is also the place where you can find the Tourist Information Desk of Ponte de Lima.
It is in the middle of the historical center on the “Passeio de 25 abril” and well visited by tourists.
This location is when arriving in Ponte de Lima, drive through to the center of the village, and so you arrive in front of the river, continue and so you will be able to park the car on the bank of the river, where you have a nice promenade and some nice statues.
From that place you are in walking distance of every historical place to visit.
