Locals said that we should visit this temple which is placed on the top of the castle.
After climbing uo the castle youreach the temple which is kept in very good condition from the outside. The interior is ruined from the wars and conquers that happened through the ages. Overall is a good spot to visit and enjoy the views

None nowhere (the town, internet) has informed the tourists in december, 2015 that the Fortress with this church is closed for visitors. This information is available at the Fortress' gates.

Agia Sofia Church is a wonderful example of Byzantine architecture and is well worth the steep climb up the stairs.

We were here in the beginning of April and wanted to see the curch on top of the mountain. However, the whole site on top was closed due to restoration etc. We heard it might open later this summer or maybe next year, so it was a bit disappointing.
If you come here for the curch this summer (2015), you better check beforehand if it has opened yet.

We were very keen to go up to the ancient city, but nobody told us upfront that the whole site is closed for about a year...

We were walking on the road to the wonderful old city of Monemvasia when our daughter noticed a small path on the hillside. It was already hot and there was no shade on the road so we figured we'd give the path a try. What a find! Not only was there shade in spots and a wonderful absence of any people but it led us directly to the upper gate, through fascinating ruins, and onto the path heading up to Agia Sofia. We bypassed the town entirely (we did come back down into it on our way out and I definitely recommend doing that) and felt like we were on some wonderfully private excursion. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.

VERY disappointed that our hotel, the New Malvasia, didn't post on their website that the entire top of the mountain has been closed for months and will continue to be closed for the forseeable future. Makes the visit to Monemvasia very limited.

We took the steep zigzag walk to the upper town - magnificent views all the way - but were very disappointed to find that the St Sofia Church is closed for renovation. A pity, but the walk to the other end of the top provides magnificent panoramic views. It is a must, if you are visiting Monemvasia.
Remember, this is not a serviced tourist attraction - if you make the climb you will need to take refreshments along with you. Apart from the historical ruins and the natural beauty, there is nothing in the way of facilities up there.

While it is a hard climb up and worse on the way back it is certainly worth the effort. Beautiful small church at the top and lots of ruins along the way. Superb views.

The hardest part of the climb is that most of the stones of the many stairs are VERY slippery (polished). Once at the top, the paths are easy.
The church has some great frescos, but, frankly, the view is what's best.

P.S. After 15 trips to Greece, Monemvasia still evoked a "WOW" factor. Great choice. Enjoy and bring your camera!
