About
The castle is located in the territory of Bauska city and consists of two parts. The oldest - the Livonian Order Castle - was built in the middle of the 15th century, but only ruins have survived to this day. The newest one – the residence of the Duke of Kurzeme– was built at the end of the 16th century. Bauska Castle characterizes the 15th-17th century military architecture in Latvia. Its oldest part is the only fortress of the Livonian Order built specifically for the use of firearms, while the newest part is a residence-type castle fortified with bastions, defensive walls and earthen ramparts. The building is the only partially preserved residence of the Dukes of Kurzeme and Zemgale Ketler.

- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada8,617 contributionsCool Castle an Hour Outside of RigaWe stopped here briefly as we drove from Riga to Vilnius in a rented car. It is important to note that the castle hours are shortened in the winter months but when we went in April the courtyard was open early. The exterior walls of the Livonian Order castle are interesting because part of it is restored and the other half is ruins. The castle itself is set between two rivers, there are cannons placed on the hills in the front and there is a "postcard" photo opportunity on the one river bank. We spent about 20 minutes here walking around and taking photos but could see ourselves spending a little over an hour here if it were open. Parking nearby the castle is free and it is a ten minute drive to Rundale Palace from here. There are tours that include this castle and have some crazy high prices (130 Euros per person) and we rented a car for less than 30 euros a day to get out here - the drive is easy and the signage is clear.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 12, 2024
- RaeCallington, United Kingdom22 contributionsBeautiful castle with lots of authentic things to see! This was a beautiful and unusual castle and the staff were very friendly. Plenty to see, but your visit won't take more than 1-2 hours. There's no cafe and not much of a gift shop, so bring water if it's hot. Great English signage to help us foreigners.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 3, 2024

The exhibitions were fantastic. Notice: no description in English. there is an audio guide, but it not obvious where to get it. the is a paper map / directory paper in the front desk.Thank you for taking the time to visit the Bauska Castle museum! We are glad that your time spent in the museum was worthwhile. I apologize for your experience with the information in English. Actually, most of the museum exhibitions have information in 4 languages: Latvian, German, English and Lithuanian). Perhaps it was not easy to notice. There are information stands in exhibitions. Stands have a removable information board in English, German and Lithuanian on the side of the stand. Yes, the audio guide (fee 2,42 eur in English and Latvian) should be asked when buying the ticket. We will shortly place the information in the ticket office to make it easier for visitors to notice. - liucy752Taipei, Taiwan1,613 contributionsAnother beautiful castleIt was built in the 15th century by the Livonian Knights (a branch of the Teutonic Order). The castle was destroyed by war in the 18th century and currently only half of it was restored. It displays the original architecture layout, as well as exhibitions of historical artifacts. The staff in medieval costumes are friendly and helpful. The scenery around the castle is awesome, and there are very beautiful views at road to go.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 8, 2024

It was interesting to see renovation of castle. Everywhere you can smell a new wood floor.I loved exhibition of clothes. The narrow stairs up and down to the castle is fantastic. You just can imagine how hard was in the past to climb this high narrow stairs. on the right side od castle exihibition it was to clear, maybe in a future the hall will be with more exhibtion :)

Bauska Castle is a nice refurbished castle not far from the more famous Rundale Palace. The castle is in the process of being refurbished, so not all of the castle is available for viewing.
Parts of the interior are a museum telling the history of the area and examples of weapons, clothing and household artifacts from medieval days.
You can climb the tower to get views of the entire area.
There are several "activities" for kids (stocks; archery; make your own medieval coin with a sledge hammer). I made several coins for gifts for my young grandnephews.
Other comments: nice cafe next to the Castle; modest amount of walking; not wheelchair friendly.

Thank you for the feedback! Luckily a lot of things have changed! First of all, the restoration process of the residency of the Dukes of Courland and Semigallia has been finished and most of the castle is accesible for everyone. Besides the exhibitions that you have seen, interior expositions have been opened where one can see how the Duke, court and also lord of the castle lived! So if you have a possibility to come back, you are more than welcome to visit Bauska Castle again!

I am a huge castle/palace person, so I'm a bit jaded, perhaps. Nonetheless, I think this castle is skippable. The interiors aren't that interesting. I also never got a good clear view of the castle like the one in the photo on this website. There was some construction work going on too, so maybe that made a difference. The bathroom door is really confusing to open, unless you understand old iron work mechanics. Better to just head to Runedale for the day.

Beautiful castle on the river side in Bauska. A half of the castle is renovated and is ready for visitors. The entrance price is €4 at the moment until all castle will be renovated. The old part of the castle is nice to see too as it’s original castle remains! Inside the castle is museum and a small cafe. Museum could have more information in English and directions where is allowed to go. I think if staff would speak in English would be easier for tourists. All staff are dressed in old times clothes which makes you to feel the spirit of old times. The castle is nice to visit just once as here is not too much to see, but around the castle or in the castles yard is happening some events over the weekends. But definitely worth to visit!

Most people come to visit Rundale Palace, but if you are in the area, this castle is worth a visit too, it is much more peaceful in terms of visitors than the palace, unfortunately when I visited, the main tower was closed due to renovations, but still it was a nice experience.

It's worth to visit this castle if you're interested in the history of Latvia. Most of all I remember the beautiful ovens inside. And the amazing view from the top floor.
