The entire population of Wadowice city is less than 20,000 people !The Town square has a granite surface with 167 plaques commemorating Pope John Paul II's pilgrimages to Poland and over 100 Country's around the World.During my visit there were advertisement hoardings in the main town square of a Japanese "World Seido Karate" demonstration in Wadowice . Remember that the Pope was a avid sportsman being proficient in team sports as well as skiing. A beautiful fountain stood at the centre of the Town square in which pigeons refreshed themselves with a bathe or quenched their thirst. The "Piekarnia bakery" shop in the main square was literally a museum of bread and pastry's.Different types and sizes of bread .pizza's and pastries were on sale and the bakery staff just busy serving its customers. Krakow and Wadowice could be called the city of Churches, bakeries and pigeons. One of the most beautiful and cleanest Town Squares in Europe.

We visited John Paul Square a while back after visiting the Minor Basilica of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary which faces the square. The Square has a lovely statue of Pope John Paul II that was consecrated in June 2006 by Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, the pope visited here 3 times. Also there is a lovely new fountain dubbed the fountain of friendship, the base is formed with grant blocks with names of cities allied with papal cities on the Skawa. There a benches to sit on also lovely cafes

Once in Poland it's a must to visit the place where St. John Paul 2 lived. They must do more English guided tours. We ended up choosing Italian as the English guided was 4hrs later but did not regret it as the guider spoke slow and we perfectly understood everything

This square is dedicated to the hometown Pope, it is the central focus of Wadowice. I love the design of the square, its laid out with light gray paving bricks but there are large darker bricks with all the countries that St. John Paul II visited during his life as Pope, for the cities in Poland that he visited, each one has its own brick. It was fun walking around and finding out the various places the Pope visited. There are three main attractions in the square: St. John Paul II statue, Family Home of John Paul II (see my other review for info) and the Minor Basilica of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (see my other review for info).
If learning about St. John Paul II is not your thing there are plenty of benches around the square where you can sit down and take in the architecture of the buildings, do some shopping at the various shops in the square or simply do some people watching.
Don't forget to try the Pope's favorite puff pastry (kremowka) at any of the cafes around the square.

The square has much history dating back hundreds of years - but the recent stone refurbishing has really brought out the beauty of this place. The Minor Basilica, the home of St John Paul the Great, the shops and restaurants that border the square, and the rich history make this place one to visit.

There is not so much to see in Wadowice. Actually you can see all important things within 2 hours. You cannot of course miss centre od Wadowice and this Square. I was not lucky and it was raining a lot but architecture at this Square was pleasent and nice.

The square is nice and easy to find. We decided to go since it was on our way to Oswiecim. We’re glad we went because he was a great man. His home, his church, and the square are all right there! The town isn’t much but the visit was nice.

It is a lovely quiet square, close to all main attractions of the town. You can have some meal or nice snack in neighbouring cafes.
