as I said in another reivew (Trebic) another Czech town, another jewish cemetery. This one though seemed to be just part of the life thread of Mikulov; not a memorial to the devastation of the Holocaust but just a real cemetery and final resting place of the Jewish citizens of Mikulov. A bit overgrown, some of the gravestones are rather precariously tilted so I wouldn't let a toddler run around in here. but a fascinating slice of jewish history in a beautiful Czech village.

Jeden z největších židovských hřbitovů v ČR. Zajímavé místo k rozjímání.

One of the largest Jewish cemetery in Czech Republic. Interesting place to relax and can down.

well, you can pay the entrancein the new synagogue and walk to the jewish cementery, if you know the jewish tradition, you can make a wish, by writting it on paper and putting the stone on the grave...you will see many thombs and graves in here, with the wishes of those, who hopes...it is a strange place...i dont like cemeteries, but it worth to be seen.

Up on a hill, surrounded by trees, this is a haunting place to reflect on a community that once was and what could have been.

Be careful as you walk among the graves as the cemetery is built on the hill and walking can be difficult. The oldest tombstones date from the very early 1600's and was in use up to WW II. It is both a sad and yet uplifting place well worth ones time.

Whether or not you are interested in Mikulov's Jewish heritage, you might enjoy spending an hour in this quiet "oasis" set on a steep wooded hillside on the edge of the town. There is also a chapel to visit by the entrance, but check opening times as they seem not always to be strictly adhered to. Walking shoes are advisable...especially if the ground is wet.

Weirdly enough both the synagogue and the cemetery are open for tourists on Shabbat. The synagogue has an exhibition (take care: there are two synagogues in Mikulov that you can visit, here I am referring to the one next to the Jewish cemetery) on important and/or famous members of the historical Jewish community of Mikulov. Don't miss out the cemetery. Unlike the famous Jewish cemetery in Prague, this one is not overcrowded by tourists, so you can have your space to reflect, to observe the different stages of assimilation when reading the inscriptions on the gravestones and you can have a proper spiritual experience.

Of course, the Jewish cemetery is different from regular Czech cemeteries. It has specific mysterious atmosphere of the old times. And the scale of this cemetery will help you understand, how important role was the Jewish community playing in the past. Do not forget your camera, but still remember: you are in the cemetery and your behaviour should be appropriate to this place.

Surprisingly large cemetery, you can walk among the tombs and contemplate for hours. Most of the time you will be there alone, there are not that many people visiting. Very quiet. Photographer's feast. Highly recommended.
