Slovakia and especially the high Tatra are truly beautiful.
Sadly, I will still not visit it ever again as I was so scared during every hike due to brown bears. Bear attacks are happing regularly and more frequently now.
I appreciate that it is amazing that they let brown bears live in the middle of Europe, but they need to take the cost then of less tourism. I personally think it is crazy to let people hike in the same forest with brown bears l.
Just today I read an article saying 2 hikers were attacked and one of them “does not have a face anymore” - I guess I rather a pay a little more than and go to Austria.

The national park is beautiful with a lot of forest and peaks but if you’re willing to hike be prepared!

There are only paying parkings more or less official (thus more or less expensively from 5 to 20€ a day), no real path map can be found at the parking you need to walk few kilometers before knowing where you are actually heading to…

Many of the amazing hikes that you find on the net cannot be accessed directly you will absolutely need to take the gondola to get to an upper plateau and then start your hike. Don’t get tricked by your GPS, most of the hiking paths are big dirt road (often used by local trucks for renovation or restaurant access) so your app will telle you that you can actually start the hike from the upper part…

Finally the place you’re going to often change name on the path signs, you can feel lost really quickly!

We walked here in late October, the trails were quiet and the scenery was great with snow on the peaks. Starting in Stary Smokovec we took the funicular (8€ one way seemed a lot but saved us the walk) up to Hrebienok at 1285M. From here we choose to walk the small green loop trail to see the waterfalls (the waterfalls were nice but if you a time poor start and finish on the red trail and you will still pass at least one waterfall) and then continue on the red trail to Skalnate pleso 1751M. With photo stops this walk took us just under 3 hours. The trails are well marked and a map is not essential but worth the small investment (we brought one from the information centre for 3€ and found it useful). The paths are rocky and uneven and should not to be considered easy walking. On the walk you also climb 466 vertical metres. On arriving at Skalnate pleso the choice is either a 2 and a half hour walk down to Tatranska Lomnica or a cable car ride which seemed even more expensive at 12€ one way. From the bottom of the cable car it's a 10 minute walk to the train station where we got the 1€ train back to Stary Smokovec (train is hourly at 0.34 after the hour) all in all a great day out in nature not a castle, church or cathedral in sight.

A group of 10 hikers, age 45-65 organized over the internet to Travel in the Tatra Mountains, hiking the many different trails available.

We are 10 friends from Israel, moderate hikers that love nature, scenery, animals and good hospitality
After some research, we took the risk to book all of our travel (except air) from www.travleslovakia.sk.
We paid a 30% down-payment and hoped that we will meet our hosts in the airport as agreed. We did.

Lenka (office of travelslovakia) dealt with all of our inquiries, requests, needs and more in the most professional way and as soon as we arrived in Vienna, our hiking tour (Lucia) was already waiting for us.

We stayed in the national park in Novy Smokovic in the Atrium hotel. an upper 3 stars hotel with sauna, jacuzzy and more (very welcome after our 15-19 Km hikes). The hotel was clean and very well managed. Food was also good.

The highlight of our trip was obviously the hikes. The scenery, the spectacular mountains, the infinite number of water streams running, the amazing lakes at 2,000m elevation was surpassed only by the professionalism and hospitality of our guide (thank you Lucia).

Besides the Tatra's national park, we visited Slovak Paradise (do not miss it) - an amazing park with fun trails in which you will walk above the water on metal foot-steps.

For those of you that love nature and enjoy hiking, Slovakia is a must. Most of the tourism is Slovak, prices are relatively cheap and the scenery and hospitality is beyond expectations.

I'm sure you know the Tatras are amazing :) I definitely recommend you to go up to Lomnicky stit, the highest mountain that you can reach even if you aren't a mountaineer as you can take a cableway. Get your ticket via the Internet or in Tatranska Lomnica. If your budget is low, buy the ticket in Tatranska Lomnica, then walk up to Skalnate pleso and take the cableway from there, it's far cheaper ;)

We had originally planned to go to Zakopane for our Tatras hiking, but decided to go to Slovakia for it instead as we in Poland for the 4 day weekend in Agust, and were warned that the Zak would be very crowded and booked out.

This was good advice in general, as I found Slovakia far less touristy than Poland, a bit cheaper and just as beautiful.

We had 3 nights in the Tatras staying at Tatranska Lominska. Which is a very pretty spot, with a good, suprisingly well stocked supermarkets and a few decent restaurent. Public transport between the towns is reasonably good (there is also the train which is probably the better and more scenic option).

The highlight was our overnight hike to Chata Pri Zelenom Pleso. It was a pretty easy 4 hour climb through pine forest (check your map carefully though, the shortest routes are not always the most scenic; and there are a few cable car options which can take the sting our the climb if your fitness is suspect...)
The chata was excellant. Friendly staff, good food, and a setting so beautiful that you never want to leave.

You should book the chatas through the tourist office in Tatranska Lominska or call them ahead before you go. In Summer they can be very busy; and the last thing you want is a ' hour climb only to be told they are full up for the night!

Enjoy your trip, also remember English is not very common in Slovakia compared to the rest of Eastern Europe... so it is well advised to carry a phrasebook.

We took the cable car from Tatranska Luminca up the mountain (Skalante Pleso Level) arriving at a lovely cold lake. We could feel the mist and fog covering the place. We did a short hike around the lake and then went to a small restaurant house for a hot soup and french fries. I recommned to pass the touristic main restaurant and to the find the little house located 2 min of walking down from the main restaurant level. this place serves soup, hot drinks and some other basic dishes and seems less touristic an more homely than the main restaurant.
The main attraction for us was the ride down from the middle cable car station by the 3-wheels bycles (cost about 10 Euro). after going down from the Skalante Pleso level (the lake) to the middle level by the cable car, don't continue with the cable car. Look for the small sign that directs you to the starting point of the 3-wheel cart/bicycle experience (runs by a company called TATRY MOTION). (you have to go down about 10 metal stairs and move to the other side of the cable car station).
Do not miss this attraction on summer days, it suitable for kids and adults as well. small kids should ride accompanied with an adult. The ride down was on of the highlights of our vaction to slovakia.

The Slovakian part of the Tatra National Park is by far better organized than the Polish part. There is a train that connects towns such as Tatranska Lomnica, Stary Smokovec and Strbske Pleso in case you start your trail in one place and end in another. The trails are mostly well kept, clean and well signed, and most of the valleys have a mountain chalet in which you can hide from the rain or have some snack or lunch, and you can even sleep there. Some trails are suitable for everybody and some others are more challenging, the most difficult ones have chains for support. I recommend good mountain shoes (some trails get muddy or slippery during rain), a raincoat and a sweater (in case of a weather change, and it changes rather quickly in the mountains). I think the best time to visit the park is either June or September, the peak season is in July and August so it's usually quite crowded. The entrance to the park is free of charge, but most cable cars are quite expensive (we went, for instance, to Skalnate Pleso and it was 16 € per person). The car parks cost about 5,5 € per day, and there is (at least was in August 2017) a free car park in Tatranska Lomnica right by the cable car to the Skalnate Pleso.
