There're actually two castles in Trakai: Island castle and Peninsula castle. Island castle is more famous and situated in the north of Trakai town. There's a post office in a castle with the cheapest postcards, magnets, etc.

We saved our visit to this fairy tale castle for the last day of visiting Vilnius, before departing north to Riga, Latvia. We had a rented car and Trakai is only 25 km west of Vilnius, a pleasant 30 min ride. It's good signposted along the highway. Tranquility is the first impression when entering this picturesque village. Follow the signs... More

Trakai looks amazing out there on the water, and it has been well renovated after years of abandonment. The castle stories are interesting, with good galleries and items on display. I was also very interested in the story of the restoration, which in itself is ongoing and well documented.

Simply strolling along the serene lakes are an activity in and of itself. Before you reach the main touristy hub, enjoy the unaltered peace of this trail.

20 minutes from the bus stop lays the lovely castle of Trakai. It is really easy to find as there are indications all the way along. Entrance 6 euros per person plus 1,50 I you wish to take pictures, but no one is really checking if you paid for it. However is a really nice castle and in my opinion... More

Ended up having one extra day in Vilnius so I decided to pop over to Trakai. Very glad I made the choice, as it is one of the best restored castles I have visited in Europe! Train from Vilnius is only 1 euro 70 cents each way. 40 minute train ride, then a 2km walk from the train station to... More

We really enjoyed coming here and was a pleasent surprise. We went to the Vilnius bust station and took a local bus, which runs every 20 min approx., and the drive is about 30-40 minutes. Very inexpensive. We then walked from the end of the line at the bus station in Trakai about 1 mile to get here. It was... More
