A must see if your in the Vilnius area. We stopped at a pub for some traditional food and broth before the visit. i would go back with others if i am ever in the area. I would plan at least a 3 to 4 hour visit, but i like to read all the museum stuff.

Easily reachable from Vilnius, both with public transportation and with private tour minibuses. I got there by minibus, but then I visited the castle on my own. The collections on display (furniture, dresses, pictures, coins, artifacts of ages past) are all very interesting and written information are provided in Lithuanian and English. There is even a post office in the... More

There is a chance that my feelings regarding that place are somewhat biased, as I am originally from Lithuania, but when we decided on trip to Lithuania, that place was in my "must visit" list. As I recall, I visited it myself when I was a child and this visit left strong (positive) impression. There are a few floors to... More

We had to take a train to get here, but I think it was worth it. I was especially intrigued with the Karaite homes--unexpected treat, learning about this community. Bought some pretty amber at a nearby market. Lots of "old" Lithuanian flavor here.

This is one of the best places to visit in Lithuania. The lakes in the area are beautiful, the township is lovely and the castle is both photogenic and historically interesting. Although outside Vilnius, it is well worth taking the trouble to make a visit. Tours from the city are easy to organize, being offered in many locations.

The castle is on a beautiful location on an island in the lake. Beautiful scenery. The museum displays inside the castle is also well worth the visit.

The expectations were quite high: former capital and a castle. Yes castle - restored with brand new bricks to look like a new building - and the town itself with wooden houses looks like something from the 50s. Still nice place with lakes. We found taxi the best way to get there: 50 euros as fixed price to Trakai and... More

A restored castle on a Galve Lake. It is a very busy stop and popular with the tourists. Beautiful just to walk around and see from the outside. Visited the inside rooms which was limited in displays but still informative. I recommended seeing the castle if you are in the vicinity. Takes about 1 1/2 hour. This was a stop... More

Originally built in the 14th and 15th Centuries, the castle went to ruins several times and was reconstructed. The latest being in the 20th century. The castle is beautifully situated on an island in Galve Lake. We had a guided tour, which was very good. Interesting artifacts and a beautiful reproduction of the painting Battle of Grunwald by Matejko. There... More

Easily visited as a half day trip from Vilnius. There are only four train departures per day, but there's far more frequent bus service with buses and marshrutkas departing every 45-60 mins. Tip from a fellow independent traveller: I found Trakai to be a nice change from city sightseeing. An enjoyable walk from the bus station to the sights. You... More
