Nida is one of the most beautiful places I have been to. But it is so remote you really have to want to go there.

The fabulous dunes, first.

The Thomas Mann connection is other one reason to go there.
It is such a sad story, that the Nobel Laureate 1929 burnt his price money on building his dream house in, what he called Nidden, and only could stay there three summer before fleeing the Nazi threat only a few miles from Nida/Nidden in then Ost-Preussen. Sadly we this summer saw this exact border from the same place this year, as the EU- Russia/Kalingrad border.

Let us return to the Thomas Mann museum. It is a miracle, that the house has stayed intact, and is open for the public. Respect for the Mann family waiwing there demands for the property, in "respect of the local initiative".

The museum does not tell you much about Thomas Mann as a person, expect everything about the environment he wanted to live in. Unfortunately he did not have the possibility to do it.

Thomas M. chose a perfect spot on a hill above the courland lagoon for his summer house. Breathtaking view from a spot on the property, called italian panorama. This alone is worth the visit. The museum itself is nice and give some insights to not so much known aspects of his life as the complicated relation to his brother Heinrich. It is almost a miracle, that such a nice place was preserved, during turbulent Lithuanian, German, Russian and again Lithuanian times.

Summary: to be recommended!

The Curonian Spit is home to the highest moving (drifting) sand dunes in Europe. In 1929 Nobel –prize -winning writer Thomas Mann visited the other town of Coronian Spit - Nida while on holiday. After it he decided to have a summer house erected on a hill above the Lagoon. The House is currently turned into Thomas Mann Culture Centre and Museum. Nearby you can visit an old cemetery of Nida, go for a walk to Parnidis sand dune, drifted by harsh winds. On it a granite sundial stands and showint the ringht time till our days. From the area at Urbo Hill, where Nida‘s Seamark stands, you can see fantastic Curonian Lagoon in front of you and vast hills of sand to your both sides.

Museums like this gives museums a bad reputation. The point with a museum is to bring history alive with the help of artefacts. This museum has no artefacts at all, only text on walls.
And if you like to visit homes of creative artists of the past, which can be the nicest and most inspiring museums, don’t go here. The building interior is renovated beyond recognition. The outside is pretty thanks to the panoramic view.
There is no toilet for visitors.

I visited in July. The exhibit in the house was small and limited to a few posters on the walls, in bare rooms, that contained information in most European languages except English. It was hard to grasp the importance or meaning of the place. If I had known this I would have done research before visiting (so be forewarned). The building itself was a lovely wooden house up high on a hill overlooking the sea, and so was beautifully sited. I passed the time sitting out on the terrace, overlooking the sea, and enjoying the breeze through the trees, which I could have done anywhere on the Curonian Spit. Ultimately I felt visiting this attraction was not a good use of my time.

German novelist, social critic, and philanthropist Paul Thomas Mann (1875–1955) took home the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature. His symbolic and ironic epic novels are noted for insight into the psychology of the artist and intellectuals. His brother was the radical writer Heinrich Mann, and three of his six children also became important German writers. He built a seaside retreat on the Curonian Spit, which is now the museum. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Mann and his family fled to Switzerland, as his wife was a Jew. They never again occupied the seaside cottage. When WWII exploded in 1939, he moved to the US, returning to Switzerland in 1952—three years before his death.

When Soviets occupied Lithuania and many other European countries after WWII, Mann’s cottage became property of the Russian government, which allowed artists and writers it approved of to occupy the cottage with a fabulous view. Only in 2004 was the cottage converted into a museum, but few objects of “the Mann” are here. If you’re a Mann follower and want to visit the museum, early mornings are best, as tour buses arrive later in the day. This building was constructed as a family cottage, and not intended to hold 40 people milling about. There’s precious little about Mann’s works and insight to his life, or how an oppressive regime tried to control his intellect. There is a timeline at the entrance, something that can be learned from the Internet. The most impressive thing I found was the phenomenal view of the Baltic Sea, the reason Mann had his family’s retreat built at this location.

Thomas Mann stayed here for his holidays a couple of months, really nothing special. There's nothing to see here. Plus, all signs and explanations are in German and Lithuanian only.

This is Thomas Mann's summer house overlooking the lagoon. Unfortunately most of the information is in German and there is really nothing belonging to Thomas Mann here. It is largely a collection of photographs on the walls. There is no mention of the book Death in Venice anywhere.

There's no English description on the wall it's all in Lithuanian and German only. Luckily we had a guide explaining the things in English. The house belonged to a famous German noble prize winning writer Thomas Mann. Nice mansion on the quiet end of the hill top.

This is a cute house and some views, would like to retire here in the summer. Not much items in English.

Other parts of Nida are excellent, pretty village and view from the dunes is spectacular.
