The cashier and a supervisor denied us entry because one of us was a US citizen and even though both of us had our fully vaccinated Pfizer card and they assured us prior to visiting that we would be welcomed. Even had official documents showing we were there on official business. After an hour drive to get there, left feeling completely discriminated against.

Foreign visitors should be aware that the guided tour is only in Hungarian. (Rumor has it that there’s audio guide in English, but I’m not sure since I’m Hungarian and didn’t need translation).

The tour guide was knowledgeable, funny and attentive. The information was neither too much nor too little.

The boat ride was fun, the water crystal clear, the path quite adventurous. Not recommended for claustrophobic people. :-)

Boat ride in this lake cave is surely something that will never be forgotten, it is such a nice experience. Even people with not much or even no experience in rowing, kayaking or canoeing can do this and learn how to row. But be prepared, sometimes one must bend in low-roof sections and there are some narrow sections. 180 metres of ride on water is not that short as it looks on paper and in people's minds. Make sure to read some statements and rules about this boat ride on the official internet homepage of this attraction if you bring kids along.

Guides are talking Hungarian but all importat things from the exhibition (at the beginning of the tour) are also written on boards in English and German. You can pay extra for the audio guide in English or German (1000 HUF per person, additional to 2000 HUF for an adult ticket) but there are said exactly the same things which are written on the exhibition boards. I see this exhibition very educational because it explains geology and biology of the cave very well and there are also many photos from other natural sights in the world which are similar (my favourite sections are surely non-karstic and karstic caves but there is also an interesting and picturesque review of geologic periods, with looks of Pannonian basin-sea in each of them). Each visitor is given 3D-glasses at the beginning and therefore see some pictures on videos in very magnificent way.

The only weakness is that there are not many part of caves that are accessible to tourists. A great proportion of cave is under water and can be researched only by divers. Dry part of cave visit is only 70 metres long. You don't have to wait for groups with guides all along and can go immediately to boat ride when you read important things from the exhibition boards because there are only 8 boats overall and carrying capacity of each is 220 kilograms (therefore it can be waiting time in case of crush).

Lockers are big enough for rucksacks and it is a key for each of them but you must give a 100 HUF coin in there to be fully closed (therefore be sure that you also have HUF coins with you in Hungary, at least because nearly all parking automatons in the Balaton region also accept only coins to pay in the parking zones). The best time of the day for visit is maybe the earliest possible because after that many groups with buses can come. After your visit, you can buy a photo or magnet with you between the boat ride.

A short but fascinating trip 20m below the Tapolca town centre into a 2.5 km limestone cave system discovered only 100 years ago. You can paddle your own small boat round 250 metes of the flooded cave and walk through a limited part of the system. Do read the information (in English) as you wait to go down the 73 steps into the caves. Since only 50 people at a time can enter, you will need to queue for a short while. Weekends and public holidays are best avoided if you don't want to queue for too long.

I'm not one who normally gives negative reviews but in this case had to endure a 45 minutes lecture in Hungarian at the start. The guy could speak English but everything was said in Hungarian - I know it's Hungary but there exist headphones or at least an option to skip the lecture and go straight for the caves which I suspect many would have done, even those who understood the extra long lecture. If people wanted to learn they'd go to school, and this comes from a lecturer. Even the 3D film is in Hungarian with no subtitles or anything. The boat ride in the cave is pleasant though.

I visited the cave with my non-Hungarian speaker friend (I'm from Hungary). There is a great interactive, interesting exhibition about the cave, how it was formed, etc with explanation signs in 3 languages (Hungarian, English, German) that, for a misterious reason, you are not allowed to visit on your own. So we were forced to join a group, with a Hungarian guide (no other language options) and my friend had to listen to 40 minutes Hungarian speech. The guide was terrible even for me, he did not articulate well, and he had no clue how to say anything so that we actually enjoy. It was boring, long. There were quite a lot of children in the group, I don't think they got anything this guy was explaining. So after the 40 minutes suffering we got to the main attraction, the boat tour. It was great. It lasts 10 minutes max, but it is an amazing experience. It's a shame the first part is so badly organized. My 2 point go for the boat ride, and the staff has lost the rest...

You will find it at the biginning of the line... It is not easy to find it, but there were lot of people. We have waited 1,5 hours to go in (on a summer weekend). The cave is beautiful, but the trip takes only 10 minutes.

Go down in a cave for a row boat ride through the underground lake. Fun for the 30 minutes it takes.

Before jumping into the boat there is a presentation and a very nice video explaining the formation of the cave. It's very interesting, however it's presented just in Hungarian. There are signs in English and German that explains the basics, but there is no subtitles on the video, which is a pity.
You row the boat, the trajectory is short but amazing!! Totally worth to check it. The price is fair and we've spent around 1,5 hours there.

This is a good attraction, and brilliant in a hot Hungaran summer as it is blissfully cool underground. You go down the steps into the cave underneath, which is floodlit. You then get into your own canoe (takes about 2-3 people depending on your size) and paddle of into the circular route through various tunnels and mini-caves. Everything is well-lit. It is calm and quiet and a good place to go to.
