A lovely place to vist. Leave your vehicle at the hill footstep. Free parking. 700 steps to climb. But actually each step is around 3 meters long. So in short its around 2000steps walk. But you won't notice the climb as its not that steep. It took me 2.5 hrs till top hill, visted the temple 1.5hr and back down 2hrs. Total 6hrs trip was worth it. I stopped many times to take a break. V.imp.... please carry water and some snaks.(plz dont throw empty wrappers after eating and litter the forest). You'll get stalls selling water and food only at the temple premises. FYI: All food or water 10/- extra than normal rates.
Best time to visit is monsoon season June-Oct- enjoy the greenery, rain, walking through clouds. Its just marvelous! I visited this place in july 2022 will upload few clicks hope youll find it useful.

Best time to visit :- Monsoon.
650-700 steps climb, the 1st 200-250 steps are quiet stiff, later its just a normal walk and it doesnt take much energy and time.
As you go up there is a foggy wheather, do visit in monsoon , its going to be a memorable trek and you can feel the almighty presence with cold breeze around.
Carry your food and water as there are no shops around , that is one reason which makes the place neat and tidy.
Dont forget to visit opposite side of the temple there is a small old crooked temple and the view near that temple is mesmerizing.

It is good location and very pleasant experience.
Tips:
Start early reach base by 9 am or 10 am.
We were couple with kid visited this place on Tuesday not sure because of this but except initial few stalls in middle there is no place to buy water or food.
So carry water and something to eat while climbing. We carry fruits and water which helped us.
It took us almost 1.5 hours to reach top. First half is difficult and after that it's easy to climb.
There are two- three small stalls at top where you can eat snacks or order meal.

If you are willing to see the abode of Mahadev but cannot manage to see Kailash yet, then go to Kankeshwar Temple in Alibaug. You feel his presence. The temple is situated on the top of the hill, there are many long stairs to climb. However, god himself will help you to move ahead.
You just feel at peace with the clean air and atmosphere. There is no glamour to this temple, just how Mahadev prefers. It is in love with Prakriti- another name of mata Parvati, or mother nature. There are footprints on the igneous stairs. The locals say they belong to Lord Shiva.
I'm not sure if it is actually the case, but one thing is assured he surely is there. Therefore, if you are visiting Alibaug, put this temple on the must-see list.

Kanakeshwar is a Shiv temple situated atop a hill with a steep climb.
The climb starts right from the bottom where you can park your vehicle after crossing the railway track. There are close to 660 steps to reach the top. The stairs are not your regular building stairs and are paved by stones. It would help if you are wearing shoes. The view during the entire climb is really something, a side of Alibaug that people don't see much even the lake. Remember to take a bottle of water as the first drinking water booth was available only after 400 steps. On top there are 2-4 shops which sells drinks if needed. The climb down is pretty simple as it is a downward slope. People with injured knee might experience slight pain.
The temple is huge and beautiful. We were lucky to catch the afternoon prayers. There is even a hanuman temple before the Shiv temple and an abandoned well.

The temple is beautiful and majestic. The height at which it stands is amazing. The views that it offers is stunning. The structure that it is is mesmerizing.
It takes some effort to reach the temple and once you do so, It feels serene and awesome.
The structure is well maintained.

The temple is situated on a small hill near the village of Mapgaon which is almost 12 km from Alibag. The hill is almost 1200 feet high. This Temple is located on top of the kankeshwar mountain. You need to at least half day time to visit this place. To track mountain proper staircases(700 - 750 steps) have been provided. It takes about an hour to reach to the temple from the base of the mountain. If you are visiting alibag then must visit this place in monsoon. In the mid of the hill one can see "Nagobacha Tappa" (a Place of Snakes) and the famous step called "Devachi Payari" named because. The temple of Kanakeshwar is very beautiful; it is a Hoysala style structure built in 1764. A water tank, called a "Pushkarni", has water almost throughout the year. One can see the hilly region and the forest on the hill. The other places to see near Kanakeshwar are the Maruti Temple, Gaymandi (Sculpture of a Cow), Temple of Devi Putrabai, Gaymukh and the plateau of Vyaghreshwar (a small temple of Lord Shiva), etc.

This lord Shiva temple is located at a height of 5000 ft./650 plus steps from the base level. So think twice if you are faint hearted or suffer from any ailments (blood pressure/hyper tension/ heart problems/ arthritis etc) which would make it very difficult to reach to the top. Entire route is properly stepped with trees/greenary around. You have sitting arrangements at regular intervals to take break, but make sure you carry water bottles before starting your trek. As we visited during monsoon season, weather was much cooler & breeze flowing which made this climbing little manageable. During summer, make sure you start very early, it will take at least 75-100 minutes to reach top for any average person who is not used to climb to such steep heights (regular sitting breaks included) but once you manage to reach top, you forget all the pains of reaching there. Its a serene experience. Temple trust has kept the area well maintained & you feel really blessed after taking lord shiva darshan. 2-3 small restaurants give you the option of home cook thali food or snacks like poha, upma etc. Cold-drinks, tea, bottled water is also available with them. Once done, you can take a dip in small water kund. (small pond little distance from the temple) Water is very clean & cool & you get instantly re-energized after the straineous trek. One request to all fellow travellers, 'please do not litter the place with empty bottles, plastic, food wrappers etc.& help maintain the cleanliness & serenity of the place' During our visit here, we came across group of 10-15 rowdies who were openly drinking near the pond area & then creating ruckus in waters which is totally deplorable at lord's place.
