Bhimbetka is a must visit for all to see and understand how people lived in the neolithic ages, how they thought etc.
Cleanliness - Should have more dustbins as people litter the place
Guides- Horrible. PLEASE dont hire any guide. He knew nothing, he ran through the site so fast because he has a phone call for the next tourist. Its a money racket.
Not sure why World Heritage and ASI are not looking into this seriously.
You have these code that u can scan on your phone and will provide u details about the place

Being a UNESCO site, the place is well maintained. Being one of the most ancient places more needs to be done to make this popular.
We got a guide, he was rather short on authentic knowledge but urged us to visit the museum in Bhopal. And at least didn't bring up the hindutva angle which is so prevalent in any history sightseeing. Having a guide is a must.
There were couples using this as a quiet place , which is fine, atleast they weren't being shooed away.
The rock shelters being what they are have let the paintings stay for these many years. It's nature's bounty that helped this being preserved.
Must see for any interest in the beginnings of the human race.

Bhimbetka ( Bhim+ Baithak... Literal translation - Bhima's Seat ). Bhima was one of the Pandava brothers from Mahabharat.
Bhimbetka Rock Shelters is a UNESCO World Heritage Archeological site located at Raisen district near Bhopal. These rock shelters and caves are supposedly more than 100,000 years old!
The angles at which some of these massive rocks are resting is incredible.
This site contains the world's oldest stone walls and floors with carvings / paintings.
The entire area is neatly demarcated into Rock Shelters. Each Shelter has a brief description of what can be expected . However it was difficult to spot the paintings etc at many places as they have faded .
Nonetheless , a hidden Gem... definitely Recommended!
The place has a lot of steps ... senior citizens and toddlers may have issue walking up and down. During monsoons it may be slippery too. Food and water etc are not available in the premises .
We went recently , there were many people roaming about without masks .
Security should ensure people should follow the pandemic protocol like masks and social distancing which was missing .

This place is a true treasure of India and Madhya Pradesh. Located in a protected natural reserve, it's very well maintained.
It's an hour from Bhopal.
The drawings in the cave belong to the paleolithic and mesolithic period and gives an idea about the life of the pre-historic humans.
Plan to spend 1-2 hours here. Come around 4pm as the place closes at 6pm. Do get a guide.

Even if there were no rock paintings, the rock shelters and the forest would make and excellent place to visit. The rock art makes is so much better. The rocks have many interesting shapes, carved by the elements and would be of particular appeal to children.

This is an awesome place for a day trip near Bhopal. There are some 15 caves with rock painting from various eras of human history. The view from the site is great and so is the drive up the hill. The place is very well organised and it ends up being a small hike around the hill as you tour through the caves.

Just fascinating to see old age paintings in the shelters, caves.
Difficult to understand how they were made on rocks at height.
Must visit place.
You have to pay a fee of Rs. 150 for car entry with six people.

This is a must-visit place for those interested in anthropology. The rock shelters were awe-inspiring.
Reaching the site was a bit of a challenge because of the poor quality of the roads. On our return, the railway track was under repairs and the railway gate was kept closed. We had to take a circuitous to get back on to the road that led to Sanchi
Not much by way of refreshments and water. The only place was near the railway gate a kilometer or so away.

Around 40kms from Bhopal but the highway is under revamp and hence the road conditions are not so great. But this place is great for not just for history buffs but as something for everyone. Interesting rock formations , well paved walk ways and nice views of the area around. The place is gentle walk so easy for most age groups.

Hi, We are doing a road trip from Nagpur in our car. Regarding Bhimbetka, I read that entry fee for cab is INR2,500. Is this true? Also is walking the distance of 2.5 km uphill doable?

I will be travelling solo to bhimbetka in December how safe is it to go there on my own? Where can I get a car rental and how much will it cost?
Written November 30, 2018
It is 70 km approximately from Bhopal. Stay in Bhopal... travel in a cab very easily available on a day trip. You can spend a morning there and return by evening to Bhopal. The Madhya Pradesh tourism mid way retreat has fresh decent meals.... near Bhim Betka.
It is safe. Enjoy India’s ancient heritage.

If I reach Bhopal station early in the morning, where from can I get the bus to Bhimbetka? I am ready to walk a couple of km in Bhopal and another from the highway to Bhimbetka. M P Transport website says there are buses from Bhopal to Hosangabad at 5:20am, 5:40am, 6:30am, 6:45am etc. I would like to know if the bus stops someplace within 4 km walking distance from Bhimbetka. I would also like to know how far is the bus stand from Bhopal railway station.

Hi. I am in Bhopal for a few days and I am planning to visit Bhimbetka rock shelters. Are there buses that go till Bhimbetka? If yes then where can I take the bus from in Bhopal and will the bus drop me till the rock caves. I intend on coming back to Bhopal the same day. Is there any way to book for a round trip. Or will I get buses at Bhimbetka easily for way back. Kindly help

Does it involve lot of walking ? is it suitable for aged people ?
Written September 13, 2017
It does involve walking but one might see a few wall paintings right at the entrance. So, for taking the elderly to the site go upto the site entrance in a car and after a walk of 2-3 minutes they would be able to see the paintings. One might also carry a wheel chair of their own if necessary. I didn't notice ASI providing wheel chair at the site.

Its a UNESCO site and hence i would suggest don't plan for a picnic over there at least near to the site
