Ok so I was determined to do this. 85kmph in a bobsleigh sounded challenging enough. So there we go.. at first, both Google Maps and Waze show’d the wrong route, but we arrived 5m later. The lady at the front entrance was a real delight, by soviet service standards. When we finally arrived, the line seemed quite short. Oh how wrong we were! We waited about 1hour for a 1min? ride 😀 but ok, the ride itself was cool. It was just the setting, the slow and disorganized service, that bothered me a bit. That’s why, despite all of the negative aspects (I was also a bit hangry), I totally recommend this experience, if you like adrenaline! Be sure to bring cash💰

We did the winter bobsleigh as part of a stag do. It’s a real adrenaline rush, and the speeds and skill involved in driving the sled is insane. The waiting facilities are basic, and you may have to wait around a little, but it’s 100% worth it.

Having done the summer version a few years ago, I think the winter one on ice is faster and the real deal.

If you don’t fancy the full speed bobsleigh version, there are some nice alternatives that are a little more sedate

I visited in September 2022. The bob sleigh track can be seen from the train as this pulls into Sigulda from Riga. At the time I visited the track was using a summer wheeled cart. It was open for public rides between 12 and 5pm Saturdays and Sundays and no pre-booking was needed. I arrived just after noon and there was a queue and a 45 minute wait but by the time I left at about 1.30 there was no queue at all. The ride was TERRIFYING but I wouldn't have missed it for the world and am so glad I did it once. As a bonus the journey back up the hill towed at full speed by a truck is just as scary!

We stayed in Riga in June 2010 at Friendly Franks guesthouse, who hyped up the bobsleigh attraction in Siguld. We decided to give it a try and unfortunately paid the high fee of 35 Lat -US$70 per person for what turned out to be a quick 45 second experience. We thought we would bobsled a few times or that we would be given more instruction or something. Anyway, this 3hr 40 min activity involves going with a local taxi driver (no English) directly to Sigulda about 1.5 hour away, you get out, they point you down the bobsleigh grounds, staff there slap a helmet on you, direct you to some missle-like, home-made cart and start pushing down a hill. We had no idea we had actually started the activity and were quickly accelerating to high speeds. 45-60 seconds later, the bobsled cart stopped and we were ushered back to our waiting taxi and were back in route to Riga to the Friendly Franks hostel. The entire activity seemed to take no more than 5-8 minutes and felt a bit like a tourist scam to be honest. We hardly had time to get our camera out before it was over, what a waste!

The actual bobsleigh was a bit thrilling and would have been great if we could have done it several times. However, that wasn't to be as they seemed quite keen to get us moving along, out of the way and back to Riga after our first and only go. Ouch!

We suspect this attraction is quite good if you are staying Sigulda and don't need to pay for the expensive (tour-service) taxis from Riga. Unfortunately as a day trip from Riga, this is a very poor way to spend your time and money. On this basis, we highly recommend you not waste your time or money on going on the half-day bobsleigh trip to Sigulda.

Within 2 minutes of arriving we were being kitted up for the 'proper' bobsleigh run (there was an hour wait for the soft bobsleigh). 47 seconds later we were at the bottom with our hearts beating out of our chests! How to describe a bobsleigh run? Kind of what it must feel like jumping off Naiagra in a barrel! Suffice to say it's not for the faint-hearted. You're tossed around in a tin can, hurtling down a steep descent, and thrown into corners at 5Gs... it's either your 'thing' or it's not! It was definitely our kind of fun of though, so I would highly recommend it to like-minded adrenaline junkies. Only slight improvement that could be made would be the option of having your photo taken at some stage of the ride... I would love to see the expression on our faces as we went into those bends!

This is the single most fun thing we did on our trip to Latvia and it was awesome!! Well worth the train journey (which was actually really simple) from Riga out to ride this track.
There are 3 options in winter - 10 Euro pp to ride the 'soft bob' - sitting upright in a squashy 'carriage'; 25 euros pp (up to 2 people) to ride a soft bob face-first skeleton style (it has a clear front to you can see clearly) or 50 euros pop to ride in a 'real' carriage with a professional driver. All options run the same course and reach similar speeds.
We opted for the skeleton style run and it was amazing - going face-first was an enormous adrenaline rush and I'm not sure anything can compare! We were confident at the end that we had made the best decision - not the priciest option, but I can't see how it would have been any better in a 'traditional' car.
The only problem we had was that the whole thing was a bit disorganised - there are no prices on display, it's not clear where to queue or how to pay etc. We did have to stand around for a while before we worked out what exactly was going on, but we got there in the end!

The professional bobsleigh is pure adrenaline.

With speeds exceeding 110km/h and extreme Gs this is an experience for any adrenaline junkie. Highly recommended and a unique experience.

If you feel the need for speed... this is for you! Great experience. Sadly, as we visited in June I wasn't able to get the full bobsleigh experience; but in summer they put wheels on the bobs and it's still a great ride. Got there early in the day and only had to wait about 10 mins for a ride. Starts off quite tame but by the bottom you're going at a good speed and riding pretty high on the wall. A unique experience: if you like thrill rides, you'll enjoy this. Get there by train or bus from Riga - cheap public transport.

The summer bob at Sigulda is definitely worth a visit. The track is regularly used in the winter for World Cup competitions in bobsleigh, luge and skeleton.

I went on my own but paired up with two others as you need to go down in groups of 3.

The queueing system was a bit random and there wasn't much in the way of any health and safety talk; put on a hair net, a helmet, sit where you are told, head straight and legs straight and knees out. I had to sit in position 2 behind the driver (largest person goes at back) which was great for the view, though it was probably the most uncomfortable position of the three. It's also ok for children if they are accompanied.

I only waited about 20 minutes as although there is only one bob, the descent is quick and it gets very rapid round the last few turns. It's only €10 but open only at weekends. As we started part way down, I can only imagine the force and speed of the real bobsleighs on the full track length.

The driver must have been immune to 'bob sickness' as she did at least 10 descents in a row whilst I was there!

First, pay attention that there are two different companies working on the same track: one is responsible for soft bobs (slower, up to 5 ppl, can be done by children, 10€ a ride) and another one - for real bobs (faster, with a driver, 50€ a ride). Each kind of bobs have different lines and rides must be paid to two different people.
You don’t need to book anything to ride a soft bob, just show up there on a weekend (closed on weekdays) and stay in a line.
A real bob should be better booked in advance so that they tell you when it’s better to come. This wouldn’t guarantee you’ll ride at exactly this time but you’ll avoid big companies of friends coming at different time.
Great speed, a lot of adrenaline, I totally loved it!
Notice, you’ll have to sign a paper saying you’re responsible for all possible damages before riding a real bob. And here I have to warn some ppl. I’m a girl and don’t have a big or even average sized head, so that the helmet they put on my head was literally half falling of my head during the ride. Not the best feeling on speed of 100km/h, when you can’t hold or fix it anyhow and risk to get your head crashed into an ice wall. So check carefully the size of your helmet and if it’s even a bit too big, ask for another one. Don’t risk.
Good luck!
