You may find many more and nicer traditional wooden houses around the country, even in the nearby tourist resort of Jurmala, but if you come to Riga just for a weekend, this corner gives you an impression of how traditional buildings looked like. You may take bus 22 from the railway station and just come here for a lunch to restaurant --> Maja, as this is the little square where you can see the best preserved buildings also from inside.

Specially visited this quarter to see how old wooden architecture might be preserved and enhanced in a contemporary urban environment. In view of continous destruction of wooden heritage to give way for new developments, this quarter is a feast for the eyes.

About markets: it is a small yard and you will enjoy it if you will come here in the right mood, when you are ready to see a place where diverse local people meet to drink wine, eat street food, listen to (sometimes specific) music. Turn off your judgement and turn on observation!
You may reserve a table (about 20 Eur and bottle of wine is included) but I would suggest to walk around very slowly, take a peek into each tent and corner.
Local food/production markets on Saturdays (sometimes also Sundays) 10:00-16:00. During summer - also Thursdays - more about music and food.

I had read about the area in a blog and in a travel guide. For us, it was completely overrated. Most of the houses are pretty run down wooden houses. And the square only seems to be busy in the evenings or on weekends. For us, it was a real waste of time coming here.

It is absolutely another Riga, other than the old town.
Only to see if you are there for a whole week or more. We had a few days in Riga, and was recommended to go the the kalnciema Quarter. We walked to the quarter from the old town in an hour and found out a nice atmosphere with live music, but squeezed in a small corner. The surrounding is old wooden houses, but nothing particular.

A little outside of city center, but worth a visit. They do Saturday markets, Thursday live music gigs and other hip activities. Locals and tourists love it!

It has amazing Saturday market with artisan bread (Zala Maize), all sorts of street food, art gallery, wine bar and handmade accessories all in one place! Wooden houses make it even more charming! In Summer every Thursday there is an evening concert or movie screening ,which is a wonderful way to spend " almost Friday" !

If you are unsure what to do on lazy Saturday morning, visit market that is taking place here on Saturdays. Handcrafts, jewellery, food and snacks will keep you busy and entertained for some time.

Magic place in Rīga city you can see the real history there. Beautiful renovated wooden buildings, Saturday bazaar on the street in the middle of those houses you can find amazing products here like superior quality meat, hand made sweets, various hand made household things etc.
There's lack of parking for visitors.
I usually leave the car some place another side of Kalnciema street getting there easily by foot.
Worth to see!

The only place we went to south of the river. Near residential area and had nice gift stalls as well as local food stalls. Lovely atmosphere for Saturday afternoon
