We visited the Art Nouveau area and the Museum with a private guide from Raami Travel. You could easily do this yourself but unless you have heavily researched the history, you would be missing out on all of the stories and history behind the various buildings, which really brings the area to life. If you are at all interested in architecture this is a must see.
The rating is for the attraction, not the guide (reviewed separately for 5 stars).

Well worth a visit. Amazing to see so many Art Nouveau facades in such a concentrated area.
You don’t need to do a tour - we learned plenty with a good book and visiting the museum.

There are some 800 buildings in this style in Riga, but the most concentrated area is on or around Albert Street. Building follows building of jaw-dropping detail and you feel a bit overwhelmed by this small area. Made me wish I was a better photographer with a lot more time for savoring.

Breathtaking examples of turn of the century art nouveau buildings. Riga is a beautiful city, full of stunning buildings.

We went to visit this area while visiting Riga. I have never seen so many different types and styles of Art Nouveau in one location. The frustrating part is that there are no clear maps that tell you which streets you should see or what time period you are looking at for the different designs. But it is still worth the visit if you can figure out which streets to check out.

The Art Nouveau District features stunning architecture from the early 1900s. Many of the buildings were designed by Mihails Eizensteins (1867-1921). These beautiful buildings fell into bad shape under the Soviets because no one had money to maintain them. They are now slowly being restored to their original glory. Worth visiting now, but will be even more impressive in a few years when more of the restorations are completed.

I do not know how, but Riga's magnificent architecture has survived 2 WWs and occupation by Germans and Russians. A wonderful surprise on our Baltic cruise. You must walk the area and take your time. The whole city is walkable.

In just over 20 years these streets created magnificent works of architecture. 50 or more 5 storey complexes mainly on Alberta Street. Glrious colours, facades in every form of human with bears, lions and dragons. Most are now private dwellings so you cannot see inside but the glimpse of an occasional staircase is extra special ... lots of diplomatic plate cars around so dont try too hard to get in!!

No city in Europe can match the wealth of Art Nouveau in Vienna, home of the Jugendstil movement, or Barcelona, home of Gaudi, in Architecture, Painting, Furniture and Decorative Art, but several cities come close. Among these are Brussels, Nancy and Riga, and because of their much smaller size, the sheer concentration per acre of Art Nouveau structures in the last two overwhelm their larger competitors. Most were constructed in the first decade of the 20th Cent. Riga has the advantage that the majority of its greatest treasures in this style are crammed into a relatively small area not far from the Old City, and given a good guide (or a book with detailed maps and descriptions), you can pretty well cover the area in an energetic half-day walking tour. The Jewel in this particular Crown is Alberta Iela, home to 5 Masterpieces designed and constructed by Mikhail Eizenstein (greatest of all the architects who contributed to the beauty of this city), originally from St. Petersburg and father of the great Film Director, Sergei. I have already published an extensive review of this street in Trip Advisor, and will only briefly summarize the other streets of note in the neighborhood with a mention of their most important buildings, and focusing only on the two other most distinguished members of this very talented group of architects that often engaged in collaborative projects.
Next to Eizenstein, the most significant contributions to this district have been made by Konstantins Peksens and Eizens Laube. Other than in Alberta Iela, you will find their best work in Elizabetes, Brivibas, Gertrudes, Strelnieku and Vilandes Ielas. Here is a synopsis combining architect, building and location that you will hopefully find useful:
Elizabetes ------ Eizenstein: Nos. 10a and 10b (Apartments); No 33 (Apartment Building with Shops) -------Peksens: No 13 (Apartment Building).
Brivibas --------Peksens: No 46 (Apartment Building); No 192 (House) -------- Laube: No 33 (Bank); No 37 (Apartment Building); No 47 and 62 (Apartment Buildings with Shops).
Vilandes ------ Peksens: Nos. 4, 10, 12, 14, 16 (Apartment Buildings)
Gertrudes -----Peksens: No 46 (Apartment Building) ------Laube: Nos. 23 & 32 (Apartment Buildings)
Strelnieku ------ Eizenstein: No 49 (School); Peksesns: No 6 (Apartment Building)

The Art Nouveau district in Riga is the best example of this architecture I´ve ever seen together. After admiring Horta´s work in Brussels, Gaudí´s in Barcelona and strolling all around Oradea in Romania, I can say that architect lovers will be delighted.
You don´t have to take a vehicle for the next highlight. Here all the impressive buildings are next door neighboors.
There are many web pages about the Art Nouveau district, but the one that helped me the most to plan my tour was http://www.art-nouveau.riga.lv/index.php?lang=eng&p=3&pp=0&id=6.
Be ready to spend about 3 hours, because you have to walk each block twice, in order to take pictures across the street.
