- RlfDinkyRoubaix, France5,794 contributionsA large market in Zeppelin hangars. (for LED fans… essential)A very very large market apparently installed in hangars designed for Zeppelin (at least 2!). Personally I was impressed by the fish market... as in my town there are no more fishmongers, seeing haddock fillets and other smoked fish made me salivate. Otherwise the size of the pomegranates that come from Azerbaijan (between 2 and 3 times ours…) and the market with the cheeses. I didn't find the "flea market" section but I was there around 4 p.m. Funny to see a Spanish product stand (more expensive than here…). Very lively marketVisited February 2024Traveled soloWritten February 24, 2024
- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada9,277 contributionsFood and Local GoodsWe were a little surprised how early the central market closes but we also found most things close kind of early in Riga. We went around 5 pm and found most of the shops were already closing but had enough time to do a little looking and got a couple of quick bites. The market sells everything and it is quite large. We saw spots for produce, flowers, cheese, fish, meat, souvenirs and some specialty shops selling things like hats and fishing rods. The market is free to enter and most items we saw were fairly priced. We did try some delicious pork dumplings, cherry vareniki and solanka soup in an edible cup in the food hall area. We understand why the vendors close early here but we felt the food hall section would stay open a little later because of the variety of good food and drink options because we visited a similar food hall in Poland that did stay open much later and there is a pretty active bar/pub scene in Riga. The Central Market is on the south side of Latvia's Old Town and there are some pedestrian underpasses that get here easily. The train station and trams are also nearby. Not too far from here is a Stalinist style building which is now home to the Latvian Academy of Sciences and has an observatory that overlooks the area. Plan to spend about 2 hours in the market area and go early as everything starts closing by 5 pm and it is all packed up by 6 pm.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 11, 2024
- Mark WLondon, United Kingdom35 contributionsNice place to spend an hour or soNice place to spend an hour or so. This is a huge market with different sections selling a large variety of products. Seems to be where the locals go to buy food and goods so inevitably not so many things for tourists to buy. That said there are lots of places selling cooked food if you fancy having lunch or a snack there. Worth visiting in my opinion.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 21, 2024
- enricoGenovaGenoa, Italy694 contributionsA Must in Riga!If you are on holiday in Riga, don't miss a stop at the Central Market. The structure is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the old city and is housed inside 5 hangars that housed the Zeppelin airships. It's about a 10-minute walk from Old Vilnius, at the beginning of the Little Moscow neighborhood. Here you can buy excellent fresh products, fruit, vegetables, honey and souvenirs, but above all taste the delicious dishes of Latvian cuisine. In building n° 3 dedicated to cheeses and dairy products you will find the most interesting refreshment points: don't miss the pelmeni, typical ravioli stuffed with meat or vegetables. Mouth-watering!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 2, 2024
- Andrew KEastern Norway, Norway21 contributionsA real inside glimpse of RigaHuge outdoor and indoor market with four hangers and courtyard to browse. Bring cash and try some local delicacies, smell the flowers, or admire the meat, fish and fresh produce. A good way to meet locals, haggle, and maybe come away with some interesting photos as well. Very non-commercial and since it's used by locals, you'll feel like you're getting a better deal than in the center of town.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 9, 2024
- Graziano GMilan, Italy367 contributionsFlavors and surroundings of RigaPerfect! Market hidden in a former hangar, not far from the old city, it is divided into sections, both gastronomic and non-gastronomic, offering a wide choice to those looking for local food. Average prices, freedom of choice and English known by retailers! Mandatory stop for anyone coming to RigaVisited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 18, 2024
- Mike ORoanoke, Virginia1,341 contributionsHugeHuge, both inside and out. Central European markets are a favorite of ours. The availability of a large variety of fresh goods from local vendors reminds us about the tradeoff made in the US as supermarkets with factory farm produce became popular.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 19, 2024
- Shazzarinski318 contributionsA good central market…reviews spot on ⭐️I like checking out markets on my travels…this is a good one although very orderly in its set up. Great selection of berries & definitely the place to go if you’re doing a bit of self catering in Riga. Good spot for a Latvian lunch & beer..went straight after the walking tour.⭐️Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten July 8, 2024
- marnivi17Switzerland127 contributionsFirst time in Riga MarketIt is quite spacious, however if there are a lot of tourists and locals there isn’t many space to move when crossing to the other side. The smell is quite strong, if you are sensitive to fish and meat. There is an area where you have a variety of choices to eat. The food is very good, definitely recommend getting the fried dumplings in Pelmeni! Affordable prices! There are mini markets of clothing, jewelry, fruits, vegetable and more outside of the indoor market, worth taking a stroll!Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 19, 2024
- Ann CNashville, Tennessee3,359 contributionsCentral Market (Centraltirgus) RigaWe’ve explored markets around the globe, and Centraltirgus in Riga stands out as one of our favorites. This expansive market is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the market offers a vibrant array of Latvian-grown fruits and vegetables that truly enhanced our self-catering experience. Even if you're not cooking your own meals, a visit to this market is highly recommended. You can purchase snacks to enjoy as you explore the rest of this beautiful city. Located conveniently near the old town, Centraltirgus features five distinct sections, each dedicated to different products—vegetables, fish, dairy, meat, as well as other food items. There’s also a bustling outdoor area. Be sure to bring cash, as credit cards did not seem to be accepted.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 13, 2024

Located very close to the center, this area, allows you to stay indoors and warm in case of rain and snow and also to taste typical dishes. Each hangar has its own type of sale and is very nice and nice to see. Also outside it offers a beautiful situation both photographic and visual.

The market is a a short 5-10 minute walk from Riga Old Town. The surrounding area is slightly run down to say the least but that didn’t affect our visit.
This is definitely one of the biggest indoor/outdoor markets I’ve visited in Europe. The market is situated in five Zeppelin hangars, from where they used to repair Zeppelins and the sheer size of the buildings are phenomenal.
The market offers a wide range of clothing, fresh fruit & veg, meat and ready to eat dishes.
The prices were very reasonable and there was a bar which sold a pint of beer for £1.80.
You could tell it was very popular with the locals, but beware of pick pockets as we did notice some suspicious looking characters aimlessly wandering around.
Overall, an expansive market with cheap and affordable prices and tasty local delicacies.

Giant and spectacular, this Point of Sale was carved out of the hangars that were once used to build Zeppelins, so you can imagine the size. We saw at least four hangars, but maybe there are more, plus lots of stalls right outside. Each hangar is divided by type of goods, so the first is fish (smells good!!), then there is the deli, where you can take dried fruit in bulk, cheese, focaccia, baklava, desserts of various kinds and ready meals in some stands. Then there's a clothing and accessories hangar and the meat hangar. We had lunch there twice, to try different things, including remarkable soups served in edible containers, brilliant!

The only Zeppelin hangars still visible. Atmosphere and incredible diversity of products, you can find everything. Fruits in particular are very cheap and the clientele is diverse. You just have to brave the crowds around the train and bus stations to access these very nice markets for a quick snack.

Due to its breadth and variety of offerings it reminded me of the gigantic markets of South East Asia. Six pavilions dedicated to food, clothes and stuff of all kinds, as well as all the external stands also dedicated to the sale of various types of products.
Absolutely worth buying honey, some sweets and typical matryoshka dolls here.

WOW! this is one impressive market and a wonderful appropriation of the Zeppelin hangers. It's not the easiest of places to get to. A very busy road skirts it and you need to use the subway. There are also major road works around the market currently. Looks like they might be laying tram tracks, doing general road improvements and some kind of river/canal side enhancement. Anyway, it makes for a chaotic and dusty walk between diggers and lorries.
The produce on offer in mind boggling. And each hall seems dedicated to one food type, amazing. True, it is for local consumption but still interesting for a visitor to wonder around. Really puts our UK food markets to shame and a lot of the produce appears locally sourced and the vendors are proud to proclaim it. As some other reviewers have commented, there seems an awful lot for a not very large population. I wonder what happens to the left over produce. It can't all be sold each day.
The Spikeri district of old wharves is just beyond the market and is now developing into a trendy arts area with galleries, cafes and workshops and just beyond that the remnants of the Riga Ghetto, so there is other sights to see in the area. Also, there is a large Stockmann's department store very close by for a spot of upmarket retail therapy!

The fish hall is breathtaking. We want to taste everything! All the fish are smoked and very well presented. The prices are particularly attractive. We had lunch there in a restaurant stand where we particularly enjoyed the herring fillets prepared in various ways.

Honey, confectionery and, of course, caviar are available, but the latter is much more expensive than the specialist at caviar house.
The stalls are well stocked but the (excellent) mulled wine is only served on weekends.
Original in its design of renovation of old hangars.

We visited this place twice, the first time on a food tasting walking tour and then we went back on our own.
Each hangar specialises in certain products from meat, fish, vegetables, dairy and a specialist food hall.
The outdoor area has various stalls and we enjoyed our walking tour as our guide handpicked Latvian products to try.
There is a kind of bar at the back of the meat market that sells local beer the can be drunk there or taken away in plastic bottles. This was the cheapest place we found in Riga for alcohol with prices ranging from 90p to £1.30 a pint.
The toilets here will cost you 50c and the market closes everyday at 6pm.
One cautionary note our guide warned us of pickpockets.

Добрый вечер! Подскажите, пожалуйста, на рынке принимают оплату картой или только наличными?
Спасибо!

Has anyone found Masa Harina or corn flour for making homemade tortillas at this market??
Written October 2, 2019
I suggest to try the supermarkets but you may have to ask any of the vendors about a flour mill to investigate if they have or can source for you.

Je serais très étonné. C'est un marché alimentaire surtout.
