The story behind this unique architecture tells of its Latvian owner who was denied membership in the powerful Great Guild; to show his displeasure, he built two cat sculptures on his roof with their backsides facing the Guild and their tails straight up to finish the insult.

Been said before but I stronger suggest you read the story behand the 'cats on the roof' on Wiki. Its good and will make your picture more meaningful when you share with friends. A must see

We liked the story of the disgruntled man who got his revenge on the guild who refused him - classy! Might copy his style if needed in the future ;)

Situated in one of the main areas of the Old City, this building is definitely worth visiting and finding out the story behind the cats on the roof. It's quite amusing!

The cat house is instantly recognisable....if you know what you are looking for! Its the story behind it of course that makes it special and you can't leave Riga without a photo of the cat on the roof.

Definitely walked around the Old Town to find this building. Interesting to see and learn about and worth a picture but we didn't actually venture inside the building.

Interesting and funny story about the rights and laws. The cats give a story for the nice buildings.

We did a city tour on a bus and stopped at a square to view and then tour this famous house. Well worth the effort and a cute story.

If you're taking a stroll in old town, be sure you see this. While it's not worth a visit all by itself; the architecture and the story are very nice and you are probably in town anyway, get a pic!

This fine, old house was situated in the centre and had a charming story which I forgot. It was about two rivaling neighbours, though...

Do not miss this place. But you need to know the history before: read some guide books of hire a local tour guide.
