Riga's Town Hall Square was one of the most important square filled with market stalls, parades, tournaments, and performances.
Today, the city guests are welcomed by the historical facade of thr House of the Blackheads as well as the Town Hall. Roland Statue stands in the middle as the symbol of justice.

We passed by on a guided tour. I always recommend going with a guide, as the history of any place makes it all the more interesting.
The pictures of the square after the WWII and seeing it now leaves an impression. The story of the building itself was quite interesting too.

I was probably the oldest thing in this square when i visited as nearly all the buildings are carefully reconstructed reproductions of the originals that were destroyed in 1941. This really does feel old and you would never know unless you knew. A beautiful square.

The buildings here are not as old as they look. The original buildings were destroyed during the Second World War. In the post-war years, some of the former buildings were reconstructed.
This important square houses the Town Hall, the House of Blackheads, and Roland's Statue. Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is located in an ugly cubic building from the 1970s.

Nice town hall square, with The House of the Black Heads as a lovely focal point. Not quite as bustling as I was expecting it to be, but maybe it was the day and/or time we were there (weekdays in the afternoons, at the end of August). Kind of can't miss it if you're meandering around Old City Riga, which is a must if you're visiting Riga.

The Town Hall Square has a Town Hall on one side and the House of the Blackheads on the other. There is a marker where the first Christmas Tree was placed here in 1510 and they put a Christmas tree here each year. The House of the Blackheads was a highlight of Riga for us and the town hall Square is very central to the sights and attractions of Riga's old town. There are some good affordable souvenir shops to the northeast of here and there are some very good restaurants in seemingly every direction. We found ourselves walking through here quite a bit and it is nicely lit up at night too. The Town Hall is not open for visitors but there are some small attractions in front and below the Town Hall.

The Town Hall Square began life in the 13th century. Unfortunately the square and surrounding buildings were destroyed in World War II by bombing. Almost everything there has since been reconstructed and many in the original medieval style. It is a cobblestone square with the Statue of Roland in the centre. Buildings include the House of the Blackheads and the Town Hall. It is beautifully maintained and well worth a visit.

Amazing buildings around a big square. The town hall and the other buildings around had been destroyed in WW 2 and been nicely reconstructed not really long ago. Sign of wealth in former centuries with such a rich decoration. You should see it

Quite nice looking buildings. Busy area but what are everyone doing here? It is on the route of the little tuk-tuk sightseeing tour and that is quite enough just to pass by.

I’m off here in December for a mini break for me & my girls , not really sure what to expect as it’s was a groupon mystery stay, my girls are 21 & 15 , I’ve a feeling it will be boring for them , is it expensive to eat out ? & for taxes getting out & about
Thanks

I have found Rīga to be very beautiful and fun to walk around. We loved the old town, and also the beautiful and surprising art nouveau architecture. We took a boat ride also, and enjoyed it, although this ride was on the expensive side. We eat at great restaurants that served local food, and really loved the food, and the prices were very reasonable. We visited in the summer, therefore, I am not sure how the same experience will be in winter time. Maybe a local person can chime in.
