- GemsNIArmagh, United Kingdom663 contributionsWonderful Experience! If you have the chance, see a production in this stunning opera house. While visiting Riga we had the opportunity to see a premiere of Jacques Offenbach The Tales of Hoffmann in this beautiful building. Almost sold out, we were able to get seats in the balcony with only a slight restriction of the left side of stage. As tourists, we hadn't brought our ballgown or tuxedo respectively, so we were easily spottable among the finery, along with the 20 or so other out-of-towners! This was not a problem however, and we enjoyed people watching, admiring the sparkle. Free cloakrooms for your coats, surprisingly short cues for the ladies toilets! The orchestra were spectacular and the opera itself, although a little 'out there', was very enjoyable.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 3, 2024

After the First World War, the building housed the Opera House. After World War II, the building was the location of the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Latvian Soviet Union. Ballet dancers Maris Liepa, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Alexander Godunov brought Latvian music to world fame. On the stage of the Latvian Opera, Andrei Mironov did not finish his last performance during the tour of the Moscow Satire Theatre.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten November 13, 2024
- Evgenija S1 contributionXto built the Riga Opera and Ballet Theatre.I'm a Rigan and my family goes to the Opera and Ballet Theatre a lot. I'm surprised by the incorrect information some Muscovites are writing here! Actually, this opera building was built in 1863 as the Riga City Theatre, designed by the St. Petersburg architect Ludwig Bonstedt. In a fire in 1882, most of the theatre burned down. The project for its reconstruction, following the style of L. Bonstedt, was designed by the chief architect of Riga, Reingold Schmeling. That's how I want to tell people who misrepresent information - check the information before you write!Visited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 16, 2024

We have visited many times at this historic Opera House originally built in 1863. Riga is so easily accessed from Helsinki and the ticket prices are just 1/3 of the prices of the Helsinki National Opera.
The stunning Great Hall seats 952 people. We have always booked Dress Circle seats which have quite often felt cramped. This time we opted for the 1st balcony. The 1st-row seats in the central part had excellent visibility and good legroom.
The staging and the performance were stunning.

The Opera building can be found at the side of the Pilsetas Canal and not far from the Freedom Monument. It has a grand, classical style with several halls, the largest of which seats nearly 1000 people. It dates from 1863. Both opera and ballet are performed here. Very impressive indeed!

We attended the premiere of Jenufa in this classic, majestic building and it was a memorable experience. The opera itself was grand, well-performed and with Creative and innovative scenografy - all of which were underscored by the elegant building and excellent acoustics. Efficient and free wardrobe at each of the three levels, polite bar service and reasonably priced tickets. Also from the outside this theater is a joy for the eye and beautifully located in the park along the old Riga mote.

Never been to the ballet before this visit (The Nutcracker) as more of music festival/gig/live sport type of person but at 9 Euro for a last minute ticket for a prime box seat you can't go wrong (last minute tickets available daily online or from the box office).
Great venue, very old school with people dressed for the occasion (but ok to wear smart jeans and a polo) and coffee and cake available at the interval. Overall a good experience and would recommend trying to get last minute opera or ballet tickets if you are in town

Riga is remarkable city in which the world famous ballet dancers - Barishnikov and Liepa were born. There is a monument to Liepa next to the theater as he used to dance here.
Covered some miles/km to this theater specially for Boris Eifman’s ballet which is grandiose!
The 150 years old theater - very good, pompous with good acoustics and great stage not to mention the quite good repertoire.

Just came back from a few days in Riga which we loved.
Had tickets for Romeo and Juliet on our second night.
The building was lovely and the inside stunting in places.
We only stayed for the 1st half as the performance did not work us which was a shame.
This should not put anyone off from making a visit when in Riga.
You can buy tickets from there website before you travel at very cheap prices.

I have had the pleasure to enjoy two operas in less than I week. A splendidly sung and played Don Pasquale and a lovely Don Giovanni. It's incredible that in a town where you pay 3.50 euros for a beer you can live such a luxury experience with seat starting at 7.50 euro! Sound, orchestra, direction, staff ..everything was top quality.
Super easy booking via the direct website it's definitely a plus (no extra fee for online booking) . I can't wait to be back.
Small critique...DUST... from balcony to stall, the level of dust is high careful if you have allergies.

We managed to buy two of the last three tickets (presumably returned tickets) and were sitting virtually at the front, very close to the stage. The sound, however, was just wonderful and the programme was superb. In addition, the quality of the performers was right up there! It was a wonderful evening in a wonderful building in Riga.

We watched the opera Aida and were very satisfied. The production is just wonderful. Colorful and stylish decorations and costumes, gorgeous voices. If I visited Riga more often, I would definitely go to all the performances. The next time I come to Riga, I will definitely go to the Opera again.

Went last night to Verde's Trovatore in the June season. Gorgeous theatre and a charming space. Incredibly cheap tickets in comparison to UK. Worth going for the experience even if opera is not your thing.

Can anybody tell me if the lower priced tickets are very restricted views? I’ve read mixed reviews which is a little confusing. Or any seat recommendations would be appreciated.
Written January 5, 2020
its designed so no one has a bad view, I had the £5 tickets and I was just at the top so looked straight on to stage, that's better if theres a live orchestra aas it would be very loud at the bottom

Надежда,
Подскажите, пожалуйста, какие места/ряды удачнее с точки зрения акустики и видимости при посещении оперы?
Благодарю!
Written May 4, 2018
Лучше всего партер 3-12 ряд и я люблю 1и2 балконы первый ряд по центру.

Thanks

Do they show subtitles with the Opera shows in this theatre (they do in Prague which is fantastic as you can follow the whole story) ?
Written December 14, 2016
Yes, there are English surtitles for all opera performances. But due to technical reasons you can't see them from all seats. If you want to see translation don't choose seats in the 2nd and 3d row in side boxes and starting from 3d row in the middle section of 2nd balcony.
