About
Castle Ruins, situated on the hill by the river are the reminders of the ancient fortified residence of ancient Latgalians which existed there from the 9th to 13th centuries. At the end of the 13th century Livonian castle was built (Rozitten castle). The castle was situated in a strategically important place, so the Russians, Lithuanians, Poles were seeking to conquer the castle, but it was completely destroyed during the Polish–Swedish war (1656–1660).

Interesting ruin of Livonian castle
Jul 2019 • Family
Ruin of a ancient Livonian Order castle from centuries ago, atop a hill in what must have been a great defensive position. Shrouded in mystery, which makes it all the more interesting. Something you should definitely visit if spending any time in Rezekne.

Nice

I recommend it! It is something to see. And one can enjoy the contrast between the contemporary building Zeimuls opposite the ancient ruins of Rezekne castle. When I visited it with my girlfriend, it was a nice sunny weather and there was even a Big cleanup, organized by the locals. But it is sth to see. Just when you are going to Latvia- a pice of advice from me- combine your trip- Rīga, Jūrmala, Daugavpils, Rēzekne and Aglonq bazilika

Rēzekne Castle ruins are located in the centre of the city. The castle was a strategically significant object that was desired by Russians, Lithuanians and Poles, but at the end it was totally destroyed by Swedes. Originally, there was an ancient Latgalian wooden fortress on the banks of the Rēzekne River. Later, in 1285 a stone fortress was built on the site. It functioned as the administrative seat of Rezekne, as a base of the local Livonian Order knights (until the 16th century) and also as the main military support base for battles against Russians and Lithuanians. The castle was ravaged and rebuilt many times. Between 1577 and 1579, it was occupied by Czar Ivan IV Vasilyevich. During the Polish-Swedish War in 1601, and again from 1625 to 1626, the Rezekne castle was occupied by the Swedish army, during the Second Northern War. The battle took place in 1656, during which the Rezekne castle was finally destroyed. In 1660 it was reinstated but the castle had lost its former military importance. Sadly, from 1712 it was left in ruins and, the surrounding inhabitants were officially allowed to use the stones from the castle walls for the building of own houses. Today, fragments of the stone walls and the foundation can be seen on the ancient castle hill. All in all, a nice and small place. The castle hill is the most remarkable and most visited place in Rezekne since it offers nice views (specially from the Cathedral) but there is not a lot to do. The biggest remnant is very photogenic at any time of the day and, at any time of the year. Nice surroundings. You'll have a nice walk around. Worth it.

Not much to see
May 2017 • Solo
I enjoy history as much as the next tourist, but this is an attraction I would not go out of my way to see. If you are in Rezekne, you might as well check it out, but it won't take you more than 20 minutes. All that remains is a stone arch and the foundation.

Nice view and very interesting building next to them. I recomment to visit with a guide. There was a smal handicraft shop about 500 m away, near Mara statue, this place was great. A lot of natural staff.
