It was a bit tricky to find the place on foot and it's quite far away from the coach station (about an hour-long walk) and there are not too many signs to guide you. Do check the maps if you want to walk there, my GPS totally misguided me. You will take a tour upon arrival where they thoroughly explain... More

As all excursions are with the guide, it is good to visit Karosta Prison out of season, even in wintertime. It is not crowded. If you are lucky, you can get the tour for yourself only. Our guide obviously likes the job very much. The explanations were excellent and the tour became highlight of our Liepaja trip. Be informed that... More

The only military prison in Europe you can visit. You can only visit it with a guide, and there are visits every hour (at least, during Summer). Check updated info. It is a short visit (45 min), in English and Latvian, but very interesting. There is also a nice shop. If you have time, after the prison, go around the... More

My friend and I travelled around Latvia by car for a week and this was definitely the highlight of the trip. We stayed overnight at the prison which is a lot of fun. Juris stayed with us took us on a tour that night. He was previously a chief at the prison and has written his own book about it.... More

I took the bus from Riga to Liepaja which was easily done (takes 3.5 hours) and a cab from the bus station. I had read about the place and wanted to take a look. The staff were cool, the atmosphere was authentically chilling and the tour was fascinating. If you want more than just the basic tour, though, check out... More

Nice flashback of the disaster that once was here. Getting there could be challenging without a car. Guides speak descent English, Russian and know more than they're saying.

I will never forget the experience at Karosta, it is a very interesting place, a true museum where to live the old time, a jump in the past URSS. It is really amazing to see the walls of the jail and read all the messages from the prisoners. The soldiers-staff looks to work till there as that time ago, so... More

It's part of a full morning's sightseeing, combined with the northern fort, the breakwater and a quick look at the cathedral in Karosta. Tours leave on the hour and despite us being only two, are also in English. You really need a car to access all these sights comfortably though. Certainly recommend it if staying near Liepaja.
