The history of Daugavpils is intertwined with the history of the Latvian jews. A very friendly man was happy to show me around and share interesting stories about both the cities jews and judaism in general. There is no charge, but you should bring some cash to put in the donation box. If you want to have a english-speaking guide you should contact them beforehand.

The Jews were THE most important ethnic group in this town for many decades, and at some point were close to 50% of the population - definitely more than Latvians. There were 40 synagogues in this town only and most of the businesses were owned by Jews. This synagogue, which was renovated thanks to the Ratko family from the US, is the only significant symbol of this bygone era. Mr. Iosif Rachko, who despite his age is full of vitality, will show you around the place and lecture you about the history of the community. You will get to see an amazing array of photos and information, and if you are not that interested, he will not be offended. A sweet and super knowledgeable person. It was a moving visit for us, you come out understanding a bit more of how this community grew, dwindled and then almost totally disappeared at the hands of the the Nazis and their local Latvian cruel collaborators as well as the Soviets, who after taking over the area, made a lot of effort to erase what was left. Definitely worth a visit.
