Beside from being the host of the "Mark Rothko Art Center", the Daugavpils fortress has its own charm. Like many fortresses, it has nice ramparts you can walk on, a long bridge over a dried moat and some abandoned buildings. Unlike any fortresses, though, it also is host to 5-stories soviet-style apartment buildings... quite surprising. What made this place more interesting for me was to explore the area and get into some of the (many) abandoned buildings. Some are very richly designed and uncovered from the plaster that covered the red brick. Very nice. Spent about 1 hour wandering around... for free !…

In the second city of Latvia, Daugavpils stands a stunning fortress which was there through history as a line of defence from invasion. Still a major military base for the Russians during Latvia’s inclusion in the USSR. Even visited by Napoleon on his journey back from Moscow, probably nursing the tail between his legs!…

About a ten minute drive from the city. The information is limited on the site, so read up before visiting. The town looked a bit dead (maybe it was too early). The old buildings are picturesque and nice to photograph.

Hello, Gregory! Thank you for your review. There is the Daugavpils Fortress Culture & Information Centre operating in the fortress, where all relevant information about the site, its history and revitalization could be found for free. Usually, it is open from 10.00 till 18.00 and it is situated in the red-brick two-story former Water Lifting House (5 Nikolaja St.) near the Nicholas gate. We agree that there could be more information on the site, we are working on it. Have a nice day and see you again in the Daugavpils Fortress.
