It's not to believe that such a fantastic place remains unknown to most of the international tourist community! Located in Gauja NP, not far from the A2 road from Riga, and near Cesis, this ensemble of archeological and historic value at the lakeside contains different types of constructions which take you way back in time. The oldest part is a reconstruction of huts from the Stone and Bronze ages. There are also the ruins of a Livonian castle (14th-16th century) and the top attraction is an amazing reconstructed fishermen's village (9th-10th century). On a wooden platform in the lake sixteen huts have been rebuilt with methods and materials faithful to the original that was found here.
Up the hill is a pretty windmill which is also part of this museum park. Near the ticket shop you can enjoy a relaxed picnic and take nice pics.

This is part of the archeological park, not far from the medieval Cesis, that features a reconstructed 9th century village on a lake, a Palaeolithic dwelling and ruins of a Medieval castle. The lake village is the most impressive, especially if you bear in mind that residents spent their entire life on that wooden platform, without venturing farther than a few hundred yards from home. Nine or ten "houses" are on display, as well as a jeweller's smithy and a fisherman's "shop".

I'm glad I read Trip Advisor and decided to visit this site. I think it's even more interesting than Cesis old town. On the day I visited, there was a special day, and they were celebrating with traditional music and food. Entrance was for free, but normally you pay (1-2€). On special occasions, people dress up like in the old times, and show how life used to be. On the other side of the road, there is also a nice windmill.

Terrible. We arrived 45 minutes before closing and they kicked us out. The receptionists at the site were very unfriendly and rude, they yelled at us and we had to leave with our tails between our legs. This happened on August 17 at 6:15 p.m.

Several archaeological excavations exposed residues of buildings from five different historic periods. Alltogether were found residues of approximately 45 wooden buildings - residential and farm buildings as well as rampart around the perimeter for purpose of defence. The ramparts were fortified with post fences or palisades. The reconstruction is made according to earlier settlement, which is identified as late iron age settlement of native Latgallians. The settlement covered approximately 2000m². In order to protect it, the settlement has been built on low islands, which were probably artificially flooded so that the buildings were at least some 50m from the shore and similarly fortified hill. It is possible that the settlement was occupied by some 70 to 100 people and is believed it was a small district center. Using archaeological data 14 ancient buildings were rebuilt. Next to this open air museum of iron age dwelling site, there is also Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements' reconstruction.

Bronze-age summer village on a small island, and houses built on lake just if a flood will be. And ruins of a castle, but there is a good mock in front of ruins. A church and a mansion across the lake are very romantic. This a hour of walking around was good refreshing visit.

Very well reconstructed wooden fortress was sitting in the lake and you could roam freely around the cottages. The cottages were replicas of the original ones which were found during the diggings near the current site.

The castle ruins were just pile of rocks, where you could imagine how the castle might have looked like.

There is also some stone age settlement next to the castle ruins.

The overall experience was average as there was little information about the history of the place. If you are interested in visiting this place, we highly recommend getting more information of this place beforehand.

The entrance fee is quite modest for Scandinavians. Don't drop this off from your "go to"-list if you are on a budget trip.

It was once cosy and easy to access place deep in Latvian countryside, interesting for children and enthusiasts. One of my beloved destinations for occasional visits. Now it was poorly managed and expensive parking place in rural environment. No, of course reconstructed loghouses and ruins of medieval castella are still there, but price for visit at field with some stones and rotting dwellings is too high. Suppose it is too expensive object for National Museum of Latvia to maintain.

This is a reconstructed communal group of a prehistoric Latgalian wooden buildings beside a small lake. there are a few information boards explaining the archaeological finds and the functions of the different buildings. We found the site very interesting and were so glad to have come across it.

9th century lake village is the highlight. Neolithic site is based on dwellings found in other areas.
