Historic Cēsis Saint John Church is one of Latvia oldest medieval monuments of architecture. Constructed in the early 1200s—at the time Cēsis Castle was constructed—340 years before Shakespeare’s birth. In 1209AD, German crusaders known as Livonian Brothers of the Sword began construction of this castle, that they called Weden, the German name for Cesis. The church was constructed for worship by the crusaders—and invaders. The church is the largest medieval basilica outside Riga. It is 213 feet long by a width half that, dimensions common for the era. A thousand seats are provided. Historic art and monuments are original and are now protected cultural heritage objects. World renowned chorus and organ music is performed here, and is the home for the International Organ Player Festival. Without hordes of tourists cramming into the building like sardines, this church can be appreciated more than those in populated cities. A must-see if in Cēsis.

... if you happen to be passing through Cesis, as I was on a tour between Riga and Tallinn. Not a whole lot to see in the church, but its simple style is typical of Reformation styles.

Not too much to see and need to pay for the entrance.
If you are not fan of church's avoid to pay the entrance

It costs just €2 to go up the church tower, which gives you a nice view through metal grills in the bell tower.
It is all stairs, rather than ladders, but the first section does involve narrow stone stairs.
There was a small display in the tower, but it's all in Latvian.

Out of all churches I have seen, this one impressed me most. 13th century construction is massive and impressive. Church carries a lot of cultural and historical value since Livonian period. Once of the oldest remaining Gothic buildings in country will impress you both visually and historically. It is definitely worth a special visit. Make sure you have familiarised yourself with history of site beforehand.

Most visitors come to Cesis for the Order of Knights Casyle and overlook St John's church. Its not ornate, its currently under renovation but it is beautiful in its simplicity. Worth the 1€ to climb the 100+ steps of the belltower. Views wow!

Nice church right inside of the town. But it's currently under renovation. You may go in but sometimes they may expect you to "donate."

There were big renovation work outside of the church, but it was possible to enter.
Interesting was feel how old and simple this church was. We also were touched by Estonian connection - could admire painter Köler's masterpiece from 19th century.

During my visit the church was covered in scaffolding and some renovation was taking place so i was unable to enter, even though it was early on a Sunday morning. In front of the church is a large square with fountains. It is actually the largest medieval basilica outside Riga and was built in the early 13th century.
