About
TYPA is a design centre for print and paper art where we display a host of historic presses and traditional techniques from papermaking to letterpress book printing. Old machinery is complemented by contemporary architectural paper objects and folded designs. Artists from all around the world work in the studio and display their works in the on-site gallery. As a visitor, you will be given a tour around the centre, during which you will be able to experience work both as a papermaker and a printer. We will take you 2000 years back in history and work our way back into the modern digital world. The tour is included in the price of the ticket, lasts for about 1-1,5 h and is suitable for kids as well as adults. In addition to the tour, we can host various workshops. Ask your tour guide for more information. In our shop corner, you can find a selection of journals and notebooks that we manufacture by hand and we also take custom orders for diaries and albums, as well as custom prints.

One hour guided tour was really enchanting experience and we spent another hour wrapping our heads around all the surprising new.
If you are in Tartu and looking for time well spent, go visit them.

Our guide Aydan, she is amazing and very cultivated artist. Thanks to her guiding, we discovered a lot about Heildelberg, Gutenberg and other paper printing procedures. Thanks a lot Aydan, and Typa!

Typa really surprised me, So much that I’m now writing my first review ever on tripadvisor, because they deserve it! Learning so much about paper production and the later printing processes couldn’t have been more interesting and engaging. The museum is so interactive and you can feel the staff is really passionate about their work!

Guided tour and hands on activities are part of the visit, fun to visit several times. Good example of a museum to be fun and educational at the same time.

You'd never believe the history of paper and printing could be this fun

The staff are lovely, skilled and knowledgeable. You'll walk through a couple thousand years of paper history, being all hands-on at every step. I didn't know pretty much anything about papermaking or printing before visiting but now I've been let in on the secrets of this ancient art and have even tried a hand at it myself. Definitely the coolest museum I've been to!

Absolutely Incredible

Absolutely unique hand-making paper manufacture that offers you to make your own paper, stamp it, and then try yourself in poster-making - all using authentic old machinery. I loved every second of my visit! Recommend to everyone: couples, youth, children!

Insightful tour of the printing world
Aug 2019
We didn't quite know what to expect from this place. It is not really a museum nor a print shop... and you have to know it is there, as you would never find the place "randomly".

We didn't make any advance booking (not even sure you can). We walked in and the person at the entrance asked if we were there for the tour... and there it started off right away as she became our guide. Alright, private tour !

You first start with making your own paper, then get to see paper artworks, then you get to see old printing machines and try a few things. Our guide was very interesting and her English was perfect. She was knowledgeable not only of the stuff concerning the museum / print shop, but the history as well.

The tour lasted a good 90 minutes and it went by so fast. For 8 Euros, it is definitely worth a visit.

Definitely would recommend

Extraordinary

We got a private tour (included!), made our own paper out of recycled denim and then used a press to print figures on it. It was really great and interesting. The sweet cat Victoria (named after a large press machine) was an added bonus. "Not for catching mice but for stress relief" :-)

You get a view into the history of paper and printing, by making your own paper and printing it. Recommended!
