Tartu is a fine old Hanseatic town with its roots going back to the 5th century . The town was under Hanseatic / German leadership from 1250 to 1918/20 even during the Swedish rule from 1600 to 1720 and Russian from 1720 to 1918/20 . A great fire around 1760 ruined most of the old town , but it has... More

I really liked my visit to the Old City. Some old towns are worn down and a little scary, but this one is clean, and has lots to offer. Lots of restaurants and cafes with outdoor seating, and very alive with college students and tourists. I especially liked the cute little souvenir shop right by the clock tower.

When you'll get there, just find a place to seat, taste some Estonian food and enjoy the world around you. So fabulous place to review!

Compared to Tallinn and Riga the Old Town section of Tartu is small. But it is charming with a variety of interesting buildings, shops and restaurants. The large plaza is a great place to people watch and enjoy the culture. Its proximity to the University campus adds youth and energy making it a very interesting place to be.

Do the walking tour for lots of history, gardens, monuments and street scapes. The girls in the tourist office are so friendly and most helpful.

The old city is well preserved and definitely worth visiting especially on a sunny day. Cafes, small boutiques and old streets create a lovely atmosphere in this old academic town.

It is much more quiet in comparison to Tallinn Old Town. However, it feels more homey and welcoming. The place is well-maintained and clean as well.

It is nice to walk around on a sunny day. But there is not that much to watch as the town was heavily bombed during WWII. Town hall place, University with surroundings and Toomemäe are main places to visit. Also Jaani church is worth a look or better to visit concert there.
